Hi all. I'm new here and looking for some thoughts and advice. We have a 96 Land Cruiser that we bought about 15 years ago and that we are looking to probably sell sometime this year. It has only about 235000 miles on it, and we had the engine completely rebuilt (along with a lot of other work) just two years and 7000 miles ago. It is completely stock, but unfortunately doesn't have either locking front/rear or center differentials. I've basically used it for snow or rough 4WD trailheads to climb 14ers as we live in Colorado. The interior is in good shape (grey leather) but the exterior has dark green paint that is badly fading on the horizontal surfaces. I would like to obviously maximize what I sell it for but have no idea how to go about it with a car this unique (to me). Any thoughts will be much appreciated. I can attach photos later if needed. Thanks in advance!

I'm not a moderator, but it seems like getting a little guidance before you post a listing in the classifieds section should have a place on the forum somewhere and that your general question isn't out of line. Hopefully someone can chime in with more guidance on where this content should live.

I'll throw out a few thoughts on your question/post:
  • Your '96 does have a center diff lock. It actuates automatically when you shift into low range. You can add a manual switch and/or disable automatic actuation but you have a CDL either way.
  • Your 96 also should have shipped with a viscous coupling in the transfer case so that when the CDL is not engaged there is still a connection in between the front and rear axles. If the driveshafts (front and rear) spin at different speeds the viscous coupler thickens up and sends power to the axle with less traction, etc. The VC can be removed without causing issues and many run without them so yours may or may not still have one.
  • Look for ads in the classifieds to get a sense for how to structure your listing. Note you need a good write up and good photos to make selling easier (you'll have fewer questions to answer if the info is in the ad) and better info will often help you get a higher price unless you are asking too much and the photos show all the flaws. Showing flaws is good in my opinion, just price accordingly.
  • Prices for these vary by region so as with real estate, comps need to align on most points to be more useful.
  • Rust and failing paint are pretty pricey to sort so will be important pricing factors.
Good luck re-homing your 80.

Thank you very much. I appreciate all that!

what did the complete engine rebuild entail
Sorry, I'm just seeing this today and we're leaving town in a while. If you don't mind I'll respond after we're back on Sunday when I can grab the receipt at home and list everything they did. Thanks for the question.
