Thanks Pete, I'm going to give it a try with the local Toyota boys. It will be nicer.

and canted (not square to the base plate).... did they get anything right about it?

but seriously, why not turn and redrill the offending holes? worst case is you'd put copper on the back, weld up past the top of the metal, grind flat, then redrill the holes....
No, it's supposed to be canted, which is why I could not just use the ones from a later model. but everything else was wrong. If it had been my mistake I would have just welded the holes up and re drilled, but it wasn't and any way I needed my cock up of the too small bushes sorted, so it has to be redone from the start. I'll pick up the new ones tomorrow. Those eight bolts will be the first bolts in the re assembly phase. It will be a Klippies-and-Coke occasion.

Hwzt Dagha!

just power red through this thread in 15min whilst my Mrs snoors away..

Lekker build bru, love the attention to detail and the perfectionist attitude to your tub metal work.
Im also working on a 45, my second one, here in Harare.

As a side note, my pa was a PH in Nelspruit in the early 70's. Great part of the world tho i havnt been south of the boerwors curtain since '09.

If you ever find your self up north, keep an eye open for 45's. theres still a few running around up here and a few of us still dedicated to keeping em that way.

Look forward to following more of this build.

Cheers boet!

I'm going to get back onto body work soon. The tub was the main thing to get done. The other stuff is still remarkably good. The fenders were poked but I'll just buy new ones. You probably picked up that I HAVE to sell this one, but I have already committed in my mind that there's an HJ47 out there waiting to be mine, so lock your stuff away at night, you know what South Africans are like...

It is amazing where all one finds them. I can now spot an old cruiser at a km off the road, behind a hill, in a shed under a heap of old scrap while doing 180, lighting a cigarette and holding a Klippies and Coke steady on my knee...

I spotted four in northern Namibiain 2010 but could not stop to take a look as we were rushing to get to our lodge for the night. Next morning I put the MWFD and our guests on a game drive vehicle questing after desert rhinos and doubled back about 75km to look at them. Three flats later I got there all gung ho to buy them all. They were all still really nice. Most of the paint burnt off but no rust due to the dry desert climate. They belonged to a US church community project, which had been abandoned years before so were under the control of a local apparently defunct "committee of elders." I spent most of the day trying to get them together but it was like herding cats and eventually when it got dark I had to give up. Unfortunately I did not take photos. (Why TF not???) Maybe one day... they're probably still there as it is really off the beaten track

TAKEN CLOSE TO THE WHERE THE TRACK TO THE LC GRAVEYARD JOINS THE "HIGH WAY" (THE GRAVEL ON THAT ROAD IS LIKE RAZOR BLADES)

IMG_8144.JPG

While looking for the photo's I didn't take I found these I had taken a few days earlier in the Namibian park - the Etosha Pans park. This 80s(?) HJ45 was still in daily use in 2010.

A WORKING GIRL. NOT A TRAILER QUEEN.

THE SHARP END

IMG_8009.JPG

TWO SPARES - I TOLD YOU THOSE STONES ARE SHARP. TANK ON RIGHT IS WATER AND LEFT IS DIESEL.
IMG_8013.JPG

INTERIOR. (ODOMETER READING 608 821.?km) (350 -360 000miles)
IMG_8014.JPG

Considering where this vehicle is and used by field researchers for following animals through the bush I guess 90%+ of that mileage was done out of sight of any form of road and probably only the delivery mileage was on tar. That was 5 1/2 years ago... I wonder whether it is still going. I can't see why not.

Really nice build. Keep the pics coming.

Looking at the snake pic you posted is a common wolf snake. If it is it's a constrictor snake.

Thanks, will do. Just looked that up and I think you're absolutely right. Slight colour variation on mine but the tail and big eyes matches those on the photos on the internet. He was proportionally long and thin and very very relaxed. The only two cobras I have come across in the past, a Cape Cobra and a Mozambique Spitting Cobra were not relaxed and quite ready to rumble. I had my doubts. Thanks for the correct ID.

seen so many 45's like that one here in Zim. my original 45 looked alot like that. your right, its an 80's model 45, the square bezel is a give away, same as my 2. the dash also tells the age. cant tell from pics, was it a diesel?

Ja, as I recall it was diesel, but looking at the dash I don't see a kill switch like mine had/has. A '77 47 and 45 respectively. Maybe they just changed the knob. There is a weird shaped knob on the dash that could be it.

Just as I was about to start reassembling the quack has now ordered me not to do anything with my left wrist for at least 5 days. Damn!! It is bloody sore and all but useless at the moment so I have no option but to take his advice. Will put the down time to good use and go bush for a few days. after all, that's what I'm supposed to be up here for.

ouch. shame man. well, a little r and r in the bundu sounds like a good plan b. im off next friday into the sticks myself

I see you been down for a while Dagha.....Hope all is well with you & yours over there & looking forward to an update, when you get time. Cheers

Now where was I before I was so rudely interrupted?

Life got in the way, but I'm back.

Strange you should bump me today, as I've just started work again for the first time since beginning of December.

While I was giving my wrist a rest, everything seemed to hit at once. Burst geyser, additional watering points to put in due to the drought, the monkey's tore the screens off the verandha, everyday a problem with the bloody game drive Land Rovers (I hate the rubbish) and to crown it all, a whole batch of preparation for a long-running law suit.

Worst of all the heat has been unbearable and no rain this season so far. I don't know what the animals are eating out there. Scary stuff. If we don't get good rain next month the dry winter is going to be a massacre.

Temps remain at 100+. Man and beast will do anything to keep cool.

We passed this guy on a game drive. He was just sitting in one of the few remaining puddles of water. Hours later when we came back he was still sitting there. He must have really been feeling the heat.

Back to the LC. The last thing I did was to prep the alternator/vacuum pump to spray. Pulled that out this morning and found all the masking tape has gone all gooey and messy. I've pulled it off and am in the process of cleaning all the goo off with acetone. Hopefully by day's end it will be all nicely painted.

Most of my stuff is now covered in a thick layer of dust so I've got a major clean-up staring me in the face before I'll really be able to get going again.

I was in Nelspruit last week and got to see some of the upholstery. It looks really great, all the canvas work is done and we just had to decide on the colour for the leather parts. Money well spent.

Oh, a happy and prosperous 2016 to all.

Oh there you are!!!

Right on Dagha. Good to hear your still plugging a long. Sorry to hear about all the mishaps.........

Year of the red Monkey is coming! !! Lol

Damn monkeys.

Lekker to see you dagha.

It's dry alright. Damn elnino is going to turn this half of the continent to a dust bowl. Well, more of a dust bowl I guess.

At least the lack of rain helps out wit painting

Hi Guys

These are all little things sent to try us. We shall overcome. Only problem is that my time frames are now horribly out of wack. I was hoping to be finished by end March before I go to the states for 3 months. That is now unlikely, especially with having to spend some time away dealing with further prep and pre trial stuff. Oh well....

Unfortunately we have a guy here, our President no less, who makes the four horsemen look like a bunch of pussies. In early December he took 20% off the value of our stock market and caused our currency to crash by 30% through pure unadulterated stupidity.

I just spent four days in the Kruger starting Christmas day. Had I known you were so close I would most certainly tried to make contact. We stayed at Ngwenya Lodge and entered the park through Crocodile Bridge. Fantastic landscape you live in!!

A few shots from the iphone - (the wife had the good camera)

Third shot is from our deck at the lodge

This guy and others like him made us move to an island a little further east. Currently working in the sandpit, cant wait to get back and redo my littl 42.
