There might be something helpful to others in his reply, though.

VirtualBox can be attached to a USB device (it shows in the properties list of the USB icon in the VirtualBox status bar) but the item is not being captured if it doesn’t have a check box next to it in that list. Click it to capture.

Definitely. Usually, the USB setting defaults to "Any", but setting it to "Remote" might help. As I said with my post before, I had problems with he hardware or drivers on my cheap Acer laptop. If anyone else is having problems, sometimes it's the choice of laptop, try installing VB and the OVA on another laptop.

If anybody is using a HOST (meaning your main computer you are using) Mac machine and a Windows VM using VirtualBox, here's how to also get your PORT(COM 3) recognized in the Windows VM. This is important because the cable I ordered needs the drivers for the USB AND the PORT(COM 3) installed. If your cable does not require for this, then please disregard.

On your host mac machine:
1. Plug in the cable to your computer
2. Open terminal
3. Type: ls /dev/tty.*
4. Press enter
5. You should see something like this listed: "/dev/tty.usbserial-A6007dAe". Copy this down.

On your VirtualBox with your cable plugged in:
1. Right click your VM and click "settings"
2. Click "ports" at the top
3. Click "serial ports"
4. Click "port 3"
5. Click the checkbox so that there is a check for "Enable Serial Port"
6. Where it says "Path/Address" paste in what you copied above ^ (/dev/tty.usbserial-A6007dAe)
7. This is the information you should have shown in the picture below
8. Start your VM
9. On the top of your VM, click "devices" -> "usb" -> click enable M-VCI
10. Go to your windows search bar and search and open "Device manager". Or, right click my computer, right click "C drive" and click settings. On the left you will see device manager
11. After opening device manager, click "PORT" and you should see "PORT(COM 3) there or something named similar.
12. In device manager, click USB and you should see your USB enabled there as well.

Hope this helps

I can't post links here for some reason but in amazon i got a cable with an item titled
"DIAGKING Mini Vci J2534 TIS Techstream Diagnostic Cable for Toyota Firmware V1.4.1 (Newest Version)"

Verified working for Mac 10.14.13 and Windows 7 x64 VM and cable version 1.4.1
2005 LX470

This just saved me $350 worth of immobilizer resetting at the dealership. I was given a valet key when I bought the car and now was able to program new master keys thanks to this thread!

One question: it seems like every time I connect TIS to my 04 4Runner, I need to do a zero point calibration again or else the VSC/Trac lights stay on. This is kind of frustrating since my driveway isn't perfectly level and it tells you that you need to do the reset on a level surface. Anyone know why those lights keep coming on, and if it matters if I'm recalibrating that stuff when it's on a very slight gradient?

I'm trying to do the same after I have techstream running now. Could you refer me to where you bought a key? How did you get the key cut after you programmed it?

Of course! Bought the key on amazon. Just look for “transponder key” and your model/year. So if you don’t have any master keys right now you’ll have to get the blank cut using the valet key before it’s programmed because you need to insert it and be able to turn the ignition to On (not running though) during the Immobilizer reset procedure.

Thanks for the quick reply! I do have a master key just want to make a fully remote spare. I'm sure home depot will be able to do it.

Is there any point in getting a 2.0.x firmware cable instead of the more widespread 1.4.x?

Nope, not for an LC100. There are protocol updates to 2.0 firmware for later Toyotas, I believe...

You're correct. Anything above 2005/2006 will need a 2.0.x cable.

The 2.0.x cable says that it is for models 2005 and above. However, I have a 2005 lx470 and when i looked up the vin through lexus website, the production date was 01/2005. When I tried to use the 2.0.x cable, I was able to run techstream but it did not automatically recognize my vehicle and I was unable to change/look at any settings. This led me to get the 1.4.x cable and it worked smoothly. That is why I say 2005/2006 because it just depends for that year.

FWIW I was able to get my Vag-com cable (used with my Audi’s) to load up and connect with its software in the virtual machine but not with Techstream. For $27 I just ordered the cable from Amazon and it works great.
I was actually searching before I asked the same question- I still have an Audi VAG-COM cable as well. I'll just order the new one to bypass any problems.

Thank you for putting that virtual box image together, makes this super simple.

I do have one question: if start up the cruiser and have the tech stream start reading pressures from the AHC, they are all 0. If I raise/lower it then bring it to neutral, they start reading numbers (6-10 usually). Is there anything I should be doing to get them to update? I also notice if I put more air in the air bags (higher psi), the pressure isn't changing.

To read the pressures for purposes of determining spec, connect to Techstream, put the vehicle in low, then raise it to neutral. The pressures that Techstream will show after the low to neutral are the ones you need.

The behavior you described is what you would expect. The numbers can differ from reading to reading, particularly if you are going up and down a lot.

The pressures you want to see are 6.9MPa [+/- 0.5MPa] for the front and 5.6 to 6.7MPa for the rear.

The place to go to find out what to do about yours if they are not in spec is the definitive AHC maintenance thread :

I don’t know about the airbags, or what what you’re seeing there means.

Okay, thank you.

I added to air bags to assist with towing. Should I connect the trailer, connect tech stream then lower it to low, then raise it to neutral to test the pressures under the load from the trailer? I need to tune the pressure for the air bags.

I’m trying to get this going. I had a dongle from RossTech that I use for my VW. Couldn’t get tech stream or the VM to recognize it. Ordered the amazon one as suggested in the first post.

Anyone think the dongle is the problem?

I also have a Mac, but I have dual boot capability. I tried each OS.

I imagine it’s the cable. If you look at my post earlier, I was having what seems to be the same issue as you. I emailed the cable seller on Amazon and he told me it was my computer. I went ahead and did a return through amazon anyway and repurchased the same cable and have not had a problem since. Has worked every time. I have a two year old Mac and followed the instructions from the OP, other than downloading the Virtual Box program directly from their website.

Nice. I suppose there is something different about the cable, I was hoping since it was OBD2 to USB it would work. Just ordered the amazon one.

I posted earlier in the thread my vagcom cable or vcds didn’t work but the cable from Amazon does. Not sure of the differences but getting the other cable got it working for me.

Got the new cable, followed the instructions for Macs a few posts above, got the cable recognized and everything. Had to switch the start menu on the virtual machine to classic, then right click my computer to get the manage option, then go to devices.

Great write up. Glad it’s working for the Mac! Are there any other alternatives besides the Techstream and the icarsoft options??
