i made my template by holding carboard up inside the fenderwell, tracing and cutting out. cut a section from the middle and widened the whle wheelwell pattern and started with sawzall, but said f it to the rattling...used a grinder with a cut off wheel...just like butta'

Thanks for posting this up I'm just getting ready to cut up a real nice tub too.;)

Has anyone used a Plasma cutter for this? I have a friend with one who makes metal art. Maybe I should just let him go at it huh.

that'd be an awesome way to do it....softer butta' than a cut off wheel. ;)

Like you, I was nervous about cutting on such cherry metal... :D
LOL :D

I guess it depends on how massive your meats is. They all look good to me!

Funny thing is that on my SOA'd 73 with 35x12.5s I could fully stuff it and I had no rub. Just got lucky with the right mix I guess.

Rezarf, if you're going to leave that cut edge until after wheeling the rig, I've used flexible, universal, vinyl door edge protectors to encase the cut edge so the sharp sheetmetal won't cut the rear tires under articulation stuffs.

Just a cheap idea in case you'll be welding a lip on later rather than sooner.

It looks like you didn't cut anything. Looks better IMHO:cheers: .

Ouch! :frown: Why didn't you first run it and see whether this was really necessary? Quite frankly, there isn't all that much flex in the rear on a 40 to stuff the rear wheel wells with 33s (unless you break the frame......)

But if it makes you happy............;p

I think my wells are cut as well, at least I can blame the POs :flipoff2:

Actually, my rear quarters were already bent up from wheeling, and no my 33's did not stuff up into the well at all, so my choices were continue to bend or to cut. They were Swampers and the width was the problem not the height. Even though they were 12.50's they really measured around 14" wide.

FWIW, I actually get really good articulation out back, and up front as well.

I have to say that is the best job of cutting the fenders I've seen. Keeps that factory look, with the rolled edges. (Unlike the hack job the :censor: PO did on mine)

Nicely done

Thanks for the nice words. I just took my time and I can't stand to see metal just hacked up when it takes just a bit more effort to do it right.

Well, after wheeling Carnage Canyon outside of Boulder today, I think one more inch out of the rear section should allow full stuff, I was getting the slightest rub at near full stuff.

Here are a few from the day, no shots of the rear stuff, but a good one for the front tire getting stuffed.

Jim-

Thanks for the nice words brother!

Here is a picture of last september before the hard top was put back on... can see the plan then? :D

Yeah, it was easy, just wierd to go at good sheet metal with a saw... on purpose!

If you need some fender flares i've got some bushwhackers i took off to cut mine for a spring flip. Cheap if you want them, w/ all screws and welting. Mike

That looks great. I think this could be useful in the faq section, anyone else think that this could be a useful trick. I'm just thinking out loud here. Oh yeah, I almost forgot.....Nice cruiser.

Plasma cutter sounds neat for this job. I found that the sheet metal cut easier with a hacksaw than with a jigsaw.
