how do i stop spare tire carrier from rattling?

I just wrapped a sapre dog collar around the clasp, and all rattling stopped and classy to boot... I wonder what about using a bronze bushings as a replacement? I would think that would be tight enough to stop the rattling at the hinges and most likely survive the life of the vehichle. In the 60 series FAQ there is a thread about "Permanently Fixing" the loose shifter on a 62, and that was one of the steps. The bronze bushings cost me like 2 bucks. Just an idea...

Most of us are under the impression that the welds on the mounts must be ground away so that the hinge can be pried open and re-welded to close them up again after the bushings are replaced. If the pins can be pressed out then that is good news!

I had a shop put mine in a 5 ton press to no avail. I had to grind off the welds. I worked on them on and off for years before finally giving in. My rig still has the original paint. Presumably even after I weld them, after cleaning and grease they'll press out next time I need them out.

I'll buy a pair of bushings if you dig them out. Get well! :steer:

Count me as another buyer for a pair of bushings. Your doc won't let you go to your shop even if you PROMISE not to touch a wrench?:D Get well and PM me if you get them. I'd love to quiet mine down.

When I can get out to my shop to locate the bag I'll let you know. As I recall, there should be enough headed bushings to rebuild at least another 4 upper hinges. I'm assuming that the weld you are talking about is at the bottom of the upper pin. If not, can someone post a picture of this infamous weld as my tire carrier had no welds and came apart on my 10 ton Dake hand hydraulic press. I did install a new pin to avoid any possible wear on the pin OD.

Hey Bsevans, I am certain you did not intend to open a can of worms to sell your xtra bushings...BUT... if you do have an xtra set you would be willing to sell, I would like to be in line & will be happy to pay you a good price. And I would fully understand if you would rather not.

Bought my 2-75 40 new & would like to get rid of the rattle.

I ordered and received this part. I was going to install it tonight but found a couple issues. first is the rust problem at my lower hinge. The second is my lower hinge is locked up. So when I tried to open my carrier the lower hinge is locked up and the body rust at the lower hinge gave way somewhat. So I had to remove my carrier by unbolting the bottom hinge. Still haven't broken it loose.

It will be awhile before I can report bak on using this.

I live on dirt roads and this is the only nosie coming out of my FJ BUT it is really noticable.

Man, if that was the only noise coming from my 40 on a PAVED road I'd be happy.

Seriously, I did the eye bolt on the door with a spring-secured hook on the carrier.

The pin is not welded. The bracket into which the pin is pressed is formed from sheet metal and welded to itself along the top and bottom edges and where it joins together facing the tub, between the mounting bolts. If you cut all three welds, you can then take a pickle fork and drive it apart, opening up the hole into which the pin is pressed so it can be removed. Sorry, no pics.

WOW! My junk here in Southern Arizona benefits from next to no rust. There was no trouble pressing the pin out. I do not think I would have done what I now understand as the grind the welds and split the bracket. Personally, I would soak the bracket in Kroil and find a hydraulic press large enough. As a side note, I had more trouble pressing out the pins on a set of windshield hinges I got from Colorado because of the rust build-up.

A lot of factors

A lot of factors make your spare tire carrier 'rattling'.

Some parts that you have to change :
- Bushing
- Rubber
- The spare tire bracket itself

Thank you

Where are you guys getting these replacement pins? Tmarx and Bsevans those rebuilt sets really look great. Mine old pin was destroyed in pressing it out but need to find a new pin. So are those custom made?

When I rebuilt the tire carrier, the pin was still available from Toyota.

Thank you Theo, I knew I'd seen pictures of a greasable pin somewhere in a tread but couldn't remember where.

Did you use nylon bushings or bronze?

Does the leveling mount push on the door as much as the original one that pushed against the top of the door? Mine are a bit out of whack from being pushed at the top.

BTW, I ordered one of these today - thanks for the pointer. Maybe I can install it this weekend.

Made sure eveything else was tight with no slop
does not seem to be doing any damage to the door, tire size

Looks like he used nylon but I used phosphor-bronze on mine.

(Re-used the original pin on the top and bought a new pin for the bottom as I recall.)

And I have no rattles.
