At this point I would talk to the guy who ship one to the US not only for cost but what kind of jumping thru hoops was involved. If you sold to someone here would let them deal with it on this end.

I would take another look at them both. If possible snap a picture of the plaque on the firewall and the VIN stamped in the front right side. It's almost above the spring shackle. The glovebox door should have a shift pattern. The FJ40 would look at pretty good. Someone added angle iron to the rocker. Probably for protection and not covering rust. Dating the 40 and comparing it to the title is going help determine if it worth pursuing. My guess the 43 will not have a heater but the 40 might. It may even have A/C.

So I managed to open up the 43.

Buy & keep the 43. I’d not ‘restore’ the rig, a couple years from now you will wonder what you were ever thinking, and sell it as a basket-case to someone like me at a loss. I’d do a ‘rolling resto’, preserve its originality and go through it from one end to the other. Get it up to snuff mechanically, treat/seal/repair any rust, and enjoy driving it. An unrestored survivor will turn just as many heads as a true restoration... and you won’t be afraid to drive/use it.

The 40 has some interesting features (sliding rear windows), but other than that, I’d take the 43 any day. I’ve had my 40 for 28 years (that makes me feel old) and could easily find another in North America... I’ve never seen a 43 in person.

Whichever one I keep I want to drive regularly. I like your “rolling resto” suggestion, thanks!

I would have to agree on the 43. But that's because I have a number of 40s already having owned my original one over forty five years. Living in AZ I doubt I would even worry about a heater. Running gear is not a problem would probably upgrade to a FF rear and disc brake up front using axle for the correct years range for 78. Would probably go split transfer case with hand brake. But could go 78 transmission and transfer case I had. But looking at the shifters someone either did a hybrid on them or could have a upgrade already. As for deciding would wait until more information on the 40. It's not a 78 so could have some of the nicer upgrades. Both 78s would depend on what you want. Just because 40s are nothing special us who have owned a long time doesn't mean we don't want one. I personally need another one. Have a long wheel base in addition to numerous short wheel base cruisers. Mid wheel would is something would made a nice addition to the collection.

Next time someone goes by the FJ43 would look underneath. Glovebox door plaque show a three speed pattern but the shifter are not correct for a three speed. Boots off looks like they are centered like they should be unless the transfer case is in 4WD.

Eric, you need to be aware that per KSA law, expats cannot purchase or own a pickup of any kind. Only nationals or companies can own them. Just FYI.

PS: If you find a way around that rule then please share because I want one too.

Know the reason for the rule?

I have heard that because they are considered work trucks. I will let you know what I find out.

Too bad the 43. Would have been curious what running gear mods it had. Did you get any more info on the FJ40?

That looks like it may be a very nice 45. Can see it's 79+. Do you know what year it is? The 45 will give you the best ride if you not too big for the can.
The 45 is in great condition and is a 1983 model with air.

Curious is a national allowed to sell and export a pickup?

Do not see a vent in the center of the cowl so probably has the heater as well? Have seen some that have air but not the heater. If has power steering just need a PTO winch to be fully loaded.

Pretty sure they can. I have also heard that it's to prevent expats from picking up cheap labor in quantity and doing "work". These wouldn't typically be western expats that they are targeting but asian or middle eastern expats.

So I have been doing more searching and I found some really nice specimens for sale. Particularly a 1978 FJ 40 with 21000km (approx 13,000 original miles). It is green and next to it is a white 1983 40 with 100,000 km or around 66,000 miles. Both are intriguing but the ‘78 is virtually flawless. The asking price converts to $17,500. It’s out of my price range but dang!
The ‘83 is listed higher at approximately $22,600. It has power steering.

I find the 83 more interesting because of the LX badge on the front fender apron. Advantages of the 83 and LX would make it worth more. Does the 78 have a three speed or four speed? I know the three speed is easier to work on but the four speed is a much nicer transmission.
