GX470 Rear Door Gas Strut / Spring Mod

You can also do the tactical rope mod...some folks on GXOR are weaving up handles and bolting them on instead.

The GX door does have a lock built in - there's no need to be hit by the door if you take a second to lock it open.

I could use that same logic for hood struts vs a normal hood prop. It's an added luxury that is not critical, but is nice to have.

Still one of my favorite mods on this truck.

Sure, but when someone says "rogue self-closing door", I assume they don't know that it can lock open. Otherwise...it wouldn't be a rogue self-closing door. ;)

I had mine for months before I learned that it locked open, lol.

The interior pull handle? Mine broke when I barely touched it - the handle is terrible...it probably would've failed on you regardless of the lock setup.

My second GX is missing the pull handle entirely, so I assume it's a common failure. I haven't had any problems with the door lock, though.

My handle broke as well by normal use in my opinion. I found a dealer selling them on ebay for around $20. Just have to be careful from now on which is a shame. A handle should be strond and robust. Anyone out there have a hefty handle mod???

I think it was @DanKunz who made one out of paracord.

Oldish thread, neat idea.

I like door struts, haven't done it yet but I want to strutify my old subaru sedan's trunk.
I have't looked too terribly much, and this could be a reasonable threat to post the (parts location-related not topic related ;) question...
Has anyone modded the rear handle to actuate the rear door mechanism such that the handle can open the door from the inside?

I ask because I have kids that like to ride in "the waay back" and a functional inside handle would be handy.

I thought I had seen someone do this: Interior rear door release. Maybe Coops2k can give an update on how the actuator is doing.

Used it a couple weeks this summer camping, I slept in the back and it worked great, no problems.

I will be in LA the first few days of Dec if you want to see how well it works

Kinda curious about this mod. Just picked up my GX. As you open the door in stock configuration, does it seem crunchy as it opens or do I just need to lube my mechanism.

Woah hey what you do on your own time is your own business :p

love this mod.

I have an extra strut laying around if someone wants it for cheap. It's located in Seattle.

Rethink that. Every hydraulic strut project I have ever done always results in "one on, one reserve" because when it fails it sucks to wait for a new one!

Hi All,
New to this forum. I'm trying this strut mod soon. Looks like a great idea. After running into 20 stores for my Christmas shopping I find I'm too lazy to lock the arm every time! Thanks for the post.

I just completed this project today. It is better that I had even hoped for! If you squeeze the door handle to open the door, it fully opens by itself with little or no nudging. Which leads me to fantasize about a remote latch trigger to auto open. A spring might be needed to nudge it. I don’t have the skills to create that mod; anyone else?

This install took less than an hour. It only took that long because I have the weakest dremell tool on the planet.

I think it has enough resistance for 95% of the situations ive been in to keep the door open. It will keep the door open when I want it to be far more often since I am lazy about the lock. Far better than locking the arm each time which my wife and 6 year old (open the door for Daddy) cannot (or will not) do.

Best simple mod I’ve seen thank you again.

did anyone ever try the FJ strut?

For all those wondering - I bought the FJ Cruiser locking strut and installed it.

BLUF: The door will not open the full 90* as it does with the factory latch mechanism.

I created a plate to bolt into the factory bolt holes for the latch mechanism (I made it with an M8 1.25 mm threaded nut welded onto the back to relocate the attachment point so the door could open the full 90*). Unfortunately, with the attachment point relocated, the FJ strut does not compress enough to allow the door to close. You're left with not open enough, or not closed enough...

Another point of interference is the yellow locking ring on the FJ strut. If two or three washers aren't used, it's too wide to fit between the door and jam and will pop itself off.

Right now I'm living with the door opening about 80* only, but I'll be picking up a new gas strut to allow the full arc of the door.

I have a fold down table on my rear hatch and the extra 10* makes a difference when cooking at the back of the truck.

I would say the FJ mod is not worth the cost/result.
