Group buy for double cardan driveshaft?

Why is having a boot a bad thing? OEM has a lip seal to keep the dust/water out of the splines... figured this thing should have something to keep the internals clear of moisture and debris.

The collar next to the splines is the seal. Notice that it is threaded to adjust/ do maintenance on the seal. John

That people are afraid to admit using spicer shafts due to the backlash from purists.

There arr quite a few around. Most I have seen do not have grease zerks on the crosses or center section of the DC. Wonder what series of parts he used on these, as they all seem to have those nice little zerks on everything. John

So how much does a shaft cost from this guy without the group buy? I already waisted my money on a Tundra Shaft that could not be shortened.

my tatton shaft is fully serviceable and has zerks for all joints, center pivot and slip/stub assembly. I just had it out the other day for a quick inspection and it's still tight as ever.

and you would be getting used parts for double the cost :/
That's true, but you would be getting arguably stronger used parts than what come on the Tatton shaft.

If I had to do it all over again I would still buy one. If it fails on the trail I carry my OEM as a spare. With proper maintenance, just like anything else, I doubt it will fail under normal driving conditions.

If it does fail I will go the tacoma shaft route.

I would be interested if there is another group buy.

Why don't you just call Curtis and ask him what his price is now, he's a nice guy to deal with. I doubt he'd knock too much off of these for another GB. I'm sure his price has gone up a bit from what we originally got due to the added machining needed for the flanges.

I was referring to front DC shafts with Spicer parts, in general, not just the Tattons. I was hoping one of our drive shaft wizzards would respond with the different series numbers that would include those with, and those without zerks. John

I may be interested in the next group buy. Keep me posted.

Not sure that Curtis is interested in another GB. Might want to talk to him.

Finally got mine in yesterday, and after a short 80 mph stint into work today, things feel smoother than butter. I'll know more at lunch when I get out on a longer section of freeway.

It did take care of an annoying thunk on shifting in/out of drive and an occasional pop while leaving a stopped position. I think the splines on the original shaft were getting worn.

I just ordered one. He said about a week to get the flange machined. $300.

for spicer u-joints, add an X to the part number to get a grease zerk. Example - the part number for a 1310 series joint is 5-153. make it a 5-153x and you get a joint with the zerk. The dana 44 front knuckle ujoint is 5-297 without a zerk and 5-297x for with a zerk. I built a lot of spicer shafts when i worked for avalanche engineering in Bayfield, CO.

edit: to move the grease zerk to one of the caps, add 1x to the end of the part number: so 5-153-1x (correction 5-1310-1x through updated part numbers) would make the shaft a little easier to service. This style of joint is very strong because there is no fitting in the middle of the cross to propagate a failure point.

Just FYI, I called the guy and talked to him on the phone. He quoted me $300 shipped to my door, and I countered with $275 and he accepted. Seems like he has some wiggle room if you just talk to him. Haven't received the shaft yet, But its only been a couple days.
