Is this the Soup can? If so then I did it with the shortbus :)

Awesome build, sub'd.

Have a 93 I'm building up. Deflared it and now I'm trying to figure out how I want to patch before I line the whole truck(paint is bad).

Personally, I don't think there is any other way than to spot weld the holes that will hold up long term. I wish there was an easy way haha. I messed around with some thin gauge welding and didn't feel up to taking the MIG to the shiny side of the rig.
I'm happy with the way the liner looks too, having it sprayed instead of me rolling it on kept everything really even. Just a thought on how you set it up.

No 80, that I know of, has run 'soup can' on the rubicon. Hook up this spring? You, me, nuke goat, JCardona and possibly others? We can all take turns...

It's chicken sh hit in a mini truck, I've done it 50+ times, forward/ backward, flopped on it, even assaulted it w open diffs and full throttle(broken ARB compressor and beer).

But the 80 is a big pig. New challenge. You've gotta line up perfectly, there's no backing up as our rigs will just stab the butt into the ground in reverse on this.

I'm definitely game for a rubicon trip! I'll give it a go, I'm sure it can make it up....no one said anything about it being pretty though. You guys up north will know the best time to go after winter. Also been talking with some local guys about a Dusy run too. Could be a fun (an expensive) year

Hey @Booger weldz check out this video I came across. Bunch of 80s on the Rubicon, even on the Soup Bowl/Can. Lots of good footage. Don't know who it is but I'm sure they're on MUD. Soup Bowl at 1:58

Haven't updated in a while. Really haven't done too much but fix a lot of the little issues with the truck when I got it. Oil pressure gauge, sensor, level all replaced and working now. ABS dummy light gone for good. Swapped drive flanges out for the correct length with the longs. Still fighting the driveline vibes, narrowed it down to the front. Going to pull it and rebuild the DC shaft after this weekend trip to the Hammers.
Also picked up some fun tools to mess around with. JD32 bender and Notchmaster on order. Went with 1.75" and 1" with plans to rework the armor.
Will post some pics for those who don't like reading..

Took the 80 out to the Hammers with a buddy in a FJC and ran Chocolate Thunder and Claw Hammer. Rig did great. Getting some wheeling in before stripping the interior for an internal cage.

Starting to knock some items off my to-do list. Since chopping the rear wheel wells, the MT sliders stuck out about 2" into the now open space. Additionally these SOB's flex like crazy, adding some new textures to the rockers. After looking it all over I've come to three basic conclusions. 1) I hate bolt on sliders. And U-bolts? What a joke. 2) the mounts are extremely long, understandable since that's what is needed with such an inboard frame rail. But no addional gussets? 3) since the 4WU lower link brackets land basically in the same spot as the front most mount, the U bolt can't be installed. But installing only one bolt in the lower doesn't work, so that's not helping the flex.
So grudgingly I took them off completely and made some changes. 1st, chopped 2" out of the end and capped it with some 1/8"x2" steel I had laying around. The. Using same steel, made some ghetto gussets for each of the mounts except the cat guard. Next will be a fresh coat of primer/paint, then prep the mounts and frame for some beads down the frame for a more stout mount I'm addition to the bolts.
So far...

4x4 labs bumper also stuck out a bit. Tires rubbed the bottom corner even with the "uber" bump stops still installed. Grinder took it back in line with the fender and done. (Forgot pics)

New tools finally showed up as well. JD32 tube bender with 1.75" 6.5" radius die and 1" 3.5" radius die and a Notch master. Going to redo the belly pan with 1.75" .120 wall DOM tube and 3/16" plating. Main change will be adding support mounts to the back of the Tcase side, back up to the frame. Current setup caved in the hammers and is just barely touch the tcase. Tire carrier will get a redo woth 2x3 tube arms and a tube tire mount like boogers. Add the plate to close the gap between bumper and arms, hoping I'll solve the crazy vibrating tire on the freeway and trails. Once I screw up enough tube, I'll try a fromt bumper....
Still loving the rig, she's a big pig but fun.

Winning idea! Little sluice is boring

I want to try the Dusy too.
The big pig did surprisingly well on the "easier" hammer trails. Let's make it happen
I've found that obstacles aren't so much of a problem as steep climbs are (like waterfalls and things). Upper Big Johnson was, in a lot of ways, more challenging than Sledgehammer for me.

I don't think the Dusy is that hard either your rig will walk right through it.

It's just long!!!
And remote... not easy to just run into Yucca Valley to get a new something-or-other.

I did have to park my rig on Boulderdash after the drag link collapsed

For sure that's the stressful part rather than the technical aspect , I ended up getting a satellite phone after seeing a guy break down right in the middle with 15hrs out and then back in, then to have it break again.

Let me know if you guys are planing a Rubicon trip or any trip, I'd be stoked to come

Sledge huh? You sir deserve a beer. That's awesome. I'll be trying it myself eventually but want to get more worked out and get comfortable with the rigs limits.
I hear what you're saying. I had similar expectations but the long wheelbase still made some climbs no problem. Steps in Chocolate Thunder were no issue at all. Had my FJC buddy with so kept it tame.

Yeah that's what I've heard. My group down here is planning out our yearly trip and that was our first choice since rubicom and Moab were the years before.

Sat phones are invaluable!! Used it many times in Baja. Helps when a race FJC (the black one from 2007) has a electrical issue and we can call a tech for a diagram haha

Where in SD are you Mac? Home base for me is Poway, I work during the week up in LA. We have a little Offroad club called Como Chingas Offroad. Shoot me a PM and I'll give you a heads up for our next run. Probably the 911's in Corral Canyon. Would be nice to have another fat 80 along!

It required winching in several spots and sleeping in the rig from 3 to 6 am... But I was avoiding all body damage I could... Painful to get through but awesome once done. Your rig would do better than mine did at the time... Go try it!

Worked on the rig again this past weekend. Started more projects than I finished like usual.
Bent the T-case skid on the belly pan somewhere between the start of chocolate thunder and the end of claw hammer a few weeks back. 1/4" bent up enough to stay in contact with the bottom edge of the Tcase. Bought a fancy tube bender, but talent isn't included in the price, so for now I'm just practicing and wasting steel. Was going to make a new belly pan/skid similar to @Booger weldz design. To get the pate off the Tcase just did a transplant for the bent plate so I can knock it off the list momentarily.
Bent and showing where it was making contact

Some 1/4" steel plate I had laying around. Got a nice big plate from the surplus section at the metal yard ages ago. Could make 3 complete pans with it.
1/4" is pushing it for my little 110. Two passes on everything, second pass never looks so pretty for me. As long as it holds..

Mounted back in place. Can fit one fat finger under the lowest part of the case.

Also started working on the 4x4 Labs rear bumper. Lots of shaking and vibrating going down the road. Added some 1.75" tube and burned the bolt on mount to the arm to strengthen the carrier arm up. Also found a nice crack in the fuel can support. Tacked it up together. Added a light I had laying around, annnnd now instead of no light...it's too bright.

Next weekend hoping to finsh mounting the sliders, add a spacer under the rear swing out arms and a lockout pin on each spindle to keep them open on hills. Maybe even start on some smaller bump stop extensions.
