can I get your old gauges ?

Not just yet. I'm going to hold on to them for now in case this conversion doesn't turn out like I hope. My main worry is will my 6ft-4 self be able to read them from the driving position.

But, you will be #1 on the list for leftovers :)
 
Continuing the cluster mod

1. Repainted the fuel gauge needle and added orange to the new ones to match.

2. Gauge mask painted and LED's installed, EL wire installed.

3. Instructions didn't address the 2 tabs on top of the speedo. Must be a speed sensor feed for something I don't have anymore. 2 screws fortunately set it free.

4. Final install back view.

Best pic I can get in the dark of the new lighting. Not as bright as I was expecting, which is a good thing :) I had done the light shield mod in the past and was happy with that. This is nice warmer light.

The kit is pretty easy to follow and complete. I Wish there were labels on the LED's and more help on how to hook up the wiring. But the MUD data banks quickly got me pointed the right way.

Yeah the mechanical set blends much better, but obviously I'm no purist :rolleyes:

And bling only happens on this rig if the function comes with it.
 
A bitter sweet day in the garage.
The good: Got the engine fired up for the second time and all the new gauges work, alt charges, seems all is well with the very tedious rewire work :cool: With the exception of a couple minor re thinks of where the ignition and fuel pump get power. :hhmm:

The bad: While running the engine up to temp, the fresh rebuilt PS pump sprung a leak on the shaft :bang: Not looking forward to removing it with everything in the way now :mad:

Pull it apart, they are simple. Is the seal driven crooked or the bushing bad or... If the hard parts are good, the seal kit is only ~$10. :meh:

If it wasn't fresh from the rebuilder bench I would do that. They said bring it in and they'll take care of it if no abuse is apparent. We shall see. Still weird looking. The shaft seems smooth and tight. Seal looks square, just the centers don't line up.
 
On hold for now with the PS pump, so back to lingering elect issues. Looking for better locations to tap into existing circuits I discovered that the stock fuse panel already has taps in back for always hot and switched on. :bounce:

Still needing an accessory tap I soldered a wire to the back of the fuse holder for that circuit.

Also made a replacement for the disintegrated fuse panel shield out of some gasket material.

Next up, the UPS dude delivered a Box-O-Exhaust stuff to play with....

After about a year long hiatus from checking in on Mud I thought it was a good time to catch up on your build and maybe motivate myself a bit to pick mine back up.

I bolted everything together when I hauled it up here to Washington last spring and it has pretty much say in my garage since then.

Sorry to hear about your power steering pump issues. I wish I could provide some additional input here, but I'm running a V-belt setup off the old 283, running the same crusty power steering pump (I believe Pontiac or AMC) that came with the truck. Opted not to replace it during the rest of the steering rebuild, as it seemed to be holding its own. Keeping an eye on your threads to see your resolution. Seems way too coincidental to fry 2 pumps that quickly...

This is an incredibly amateur-hour suggestion, but you are certain the pullies are all running perfectly aligned with one another? Otherwise the belt could be pulling unevenly...:meh:

The rest of the build is looking great! I'm dying to get mine back from the shop to figure out what the next project will be...

Tools, got a source for a good kit that includes the bushing? I've found one from Gates and one from Master builder or something like that.

And to answer the question, yes the pulleys are lined up. Not an off base idea. It came to my mind too.:wrench:

I have used Gates and Edelmann kits with good results. All that I have messed with had good bushings, so have never needed one.

For the 1st time in 2 years and 8 months, the glucosamine patient has left the treatment center under it's own power!!!

Spongy brakes, touchy clutch and a host of other details and projects yet to finish, but it had a quick trip around the block through the gears and felt nice and smooth.

And it still had power steering fluid in it when I came back:cool:

I am by no means finished, but seeing light at the end of the tunnel now.
