I've used grade 5 for years in that location. I don't think grade 8 bolts have as much stretch in them as grade 5. And in this case that is a bad thing!

Nick

Yeah I've been reading that about grade 8 around the interwebs. Just weird this time It's a problem. Got them all around on another engine, no issues. Anyhow I ordered a set of OEM bolts from Brothers Trucks.

Any metallurgists out there?
Simultaneous multi failure.....I'm thinking crap hardware..

Looks like simple choice of hardness they way they broke , and it is heat related . Grade 8 doesn't like heat exposure and expansion , stock bolts would be a better choice for sure .

Really good to learn this! I thought, stronger bolts = mo' betta holding power.

I would have thought that too. They were used because I had an abundance of free 3/8-16 bolts to use. And they are still working on my old truck. Otherwise probably would have gone grade 5.

As it is now I have a $30 OEM set +1/2 the value to ship on the way:rolleyes:

Better to used what was designed to be there I guess..

It looks like you do not have any gaskets in there....those will help with expansion/contraction..stockers or Stage 8 locking units have worked fine on my chebby...

Cheers!

Yeah, those gaskets are on a shoulder somewhere on US 60 in Tempe AZ. Didn't think it was worth the trip or risking life and limb to pick them up.

And, on a gasket note... The oil pan is already leaking:rolleyes: So since I had the exhaust undone waiting for bolts I pulled the pan and threw it away. Shoulda done that in the 1st place, but I'm a slow learner sometimes. Its time to drain the break in oil anyhow. New pan re installed and upgraded to a one piece gasket.

And, while I was under there.... I noticed the new water pump was leaking from the back cover. Can't get break!! :bang:
So R&R on the water pump and re sealed the cover.

Been learning a lot about service maintenance on my new set up anyhow.

It's not just the grade you used on the bolts, looks like the where overtorqed at some point.

20 lbs on the inboard, 30 on the outboard? Not likely. The heat factor and temper of the hard bolts makes the most sense to me.

If I torqued a grade 8 bolt to yield in these old cast heads, I'm pretty sure the threads would yield 1st:meh:

FYI to any future searchers looking for OEM exhaust bolts. DO NOT buy the set from Brothers Trucks. The set has all the same length. Shoulda bought the individual bolts from classicparts.com. Costs a little more, but at least you get the right stuff.

With fluids and gasses effectively corralled in the engine again, for now.... ;) It was back to doing some FABulous things on the list.

Front bumper 2.0

What I had was a piece of 4 inch channel welded to the original bumper brackets. With a couple of tow bar points attached. You may remember from these early thread pics:

https://forum.ih8mud.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=487214&stc=1&d=1295847185

https://forum.ih8mud.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=487736&stc=1&d=1296009710

Since the complete re invention of the front spring hangers and frame made the old bumper mount too narrow and too far away. Time for some rework.

1. plasma the old brackets off and toss.

2. Some new brackets from some 3/8 plate.

3. Sizing up the new scenario

4. Carve some windows in the channel to pass through a pair of tow points left from the rear bumper project. Glad I got them then as the source seems to be out of the fab parts business now.

5. Getting everything lined up to tack weld.

...And out of time for the day....

Okay, front bumper 2.0 now complete. Fresh rattle can finish for temporary purty until the rock finder patina returns:cool:

Next pic: Just an FYI for any considering a "rugged ridge" product. Don't Do IT! Total crap of a tool bag I pickup to meet a free shipping threshold with an online order. Took it to the Pick N Pull this weekend with a minor amount of wrenches. Shoulder strap popped off within 50 yards and the zipper quit right after that. In the dumper now.

Minor details now resolved:

Hillbilly LED dome light :hillbilly:

And the old crusty tach has been cleaned up and re located from the column to the dash.

Been a little quiet while I'm sorting out some high steer tire rod clearance issues. Then it will be time to tackle rear disk brakes. I did get the old soldier out to the local cruiser nut meet for the 1st time in 3 years though. :bounce:

Finally got the hi steer tire rod clearance worked out this week. Hats off to Luke at 4x4 labs for being able to reconfigure his product to suit my situation.

Hoping to get it on the trail for a shake down next weekend..........
