Last night we got a huge dump so Luka and I headed to the top for some snowshoeing action before work. It was awesome up there, anywhere from 12-16" of fresh chowda!!!! I laid the only tracks going up, then coming back down the crest hwy. The sheriff was gathering up to do some training and close up the road to Placitas.

It was a great time, I tell you what.

We don't need the Ruidoso Texans to get too excited.
You already know! They drive poorly enough on dry roads around here. Mostly good people, mostly bad drivers.

FR376 and FR144 got ton of snow last night, at least 12". Get out there!!

My in-laws (from ABQ) had a vacation home in Ruidoso for about 10 years. I spent some time there during that time and always felt like NM had been invaded by TX and I was very outnumbered. But agreed, good people, just bad drivers in their Navigators and Escalades.

We got 3-4” up toward Monjeau Lookout. Took all the cruisers out to find Christmas trees. I bought all of these but only own two 😅.

376 was pretty lackluster today but there was definitely a foot of snow out there beyond the junction with 126.

Lackluster "today" you say? What happened to the 12" of snow from Friday, all disappeared?

Sandia received a lot of snow last night, round 10 to 12 in on the highway itself. 16"+ in the forest. A young bobcat ran across the road in front of me.

Pics from snowshoeing this morning at Ellis trailhead.

Oh crap! Looks like the speed was slow enough to not be too bad, just flipped around to face the wrong direction.
the speed is shown on the bottom and looks to be 30+ so I think she was going a tad too fast. I was going 20 and I spun at the same place an hour later.

Hope everyone had a merry Xmas. I got waylaid by a bug so i spent the the last two days on my couch. Thankfully I was able to go snowshoeing when the storm hit three days ago and had a blast.

There were three rigs total up at Ellis trailhead, and one of them was a CRV. Couple of hours later as I was heading down, a second CRV was stuck at one of the switchbacks. It took me about two hours to recover that CRV. Funny thing is that the two of the occupants own 4runners respectively and they were in their parent's CRV!!

So, it turns out that using an Aspen tree as an anchoring point for a snatch block is a terrible idea because they just bend over as you load up the winch cable 😁 .

A second observation that I learned that day is that it's a good idea to carry various size shackles for recovering vehicles with dinky recovery points. Often times I've had to hook multiple shackles together to do a safe extraction. But, this freaking CRV had a sweet frame mounted front recovery point but my 3/8" dinky shackle bolt wouldn't fit through the hole. Man, that was so frustrating to say the least because that recovery would've taken minutes instead of hours. Now, I'm going to have to find a 1/4" shackle, I'm thinking.

Another thing I'm going to toss into my recovery box is a short length chain with hooks at the end. Those guard rails make for awesome anchoring points but they can slice through a tree strap in short order. Thankfully I used an old, beat-up tree strap so I didn't mind the sacrifice.

While we were working on the second CRV, the first CRV slowly drove on by

I seem to recall that Tractor Supply had a good selection of stuff. Might be just enough in the quality department to get the job done.

You're right, they have a decent selection of that stuff. I'll stop by this week to pick up couple of them.

at least I get to use the big shackle at work. 😁
