FYI: Land Cruiser Owner N00b, relative to most everyone else here, but have wanted an 80 since I was a kid, and have lurked on these forums for years before finally creating an account recently.

I know there are a zillion oil threads, many of which are very old. I feel like I have looked at all of them at least 20 times each. Just wanting up to date opinions on the major oil choices with the added info of my current circumstances.

1997 Lexus LX450 FZJ80 K294
Multiple previous owners. I'm probably number 5?... -ish
Purchased at ~214k miles (August 2016)
Currently at ~220k miles (April 2017)
Daily Driver Duty (currently shared with a Volvo 850 Wagon)
Louisville, KY - where "climate" temps range from bone chilling to flesh melting, often in the same week.

Running conventional dino 5W-30 when/since I got it, appears to be consuming ~1 quart every ~1000 miles (give or take). Not leaving spots on the driveway from what I can tell. Have just been topping it off with standard yellow jug Pennzoil conventional 5W-30 when I start seeing the oil can light randomly doing its little flickery off/on dance at the bottom of the gauges. Really don't want to have the engine rebuilt/etc until 300k+ miles (hopefully).

Based on the info from the main oil thread listed in the FAQ and the majority of other previous threads, I am currently trying to decide between:
-Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40
-Mobil 1 FS 0W-40
-Shell Rotella T6 5W-40 (I think that's right?)
-And a million other choices people bring up. Plus all the high mileage variants? Extended performance? Anal Annual protection? Etc.

Ordered a single 90915-YZZD3 oil filter and a pack of 90430-12031 drain plug washers/gaskets to start. Are those at least correct? If so, I will start purchasing them in bulk from that ebay seller I've seen linked before. If not, what part numbers / brands should I use?

How long do you guys run your fully synthetic oil between changes? How about the oil filters? Anything else related that I should know and/or be asking?

I just ordered a Blackstone Labs Analysis Kit.

And had an aneurysm.

Thanks,
-Rob

Khrist on a Krutch.

Oil, they like it, get some,,, whatever is on sale? :hillbilly:

You have bad valve seals, typical for these engines at that milage. When i got my truck with 243k on it I put in Synthetic and oil seeped from any possible place..lol I went to Mobil DelVac 15-40 Diesel Oil, no more oil leaks but I was still burning oil, so when i needed to replace the head gasket the machine shop put in new valve seals so it's not burning as much at all. But my suggestion I'd skip the Synthetic.

Cheapest 5w-30 name brand dino oil I can find at Walmart. Except in the winter I just run Mobil1 full synthetic 5W-30.....also from Walmart.

It is oil...don't overthink it.

Checking your oil and changing it regularly is pretty much all that matters.

Knew I shouldn't have even bothered to post. Regretted it immediately. Apologies.

15-40 RO*TEL

I use this because of leaky valve seals. It has helped the consumption somewhat. The oil loss due to excessive burning is kind of aggravating but I only drive mine around 3K mi per year.

If I ever have to get the HG replaced & get new seals at that time.....then I'm not sure what I would run. Also, I've found that even the small gas stations usually carry 15w40.

I run either Rotella T (15W40) or Delo 400 LE/SDE (15W40) in everything I own. Whichever one is on sale.

I live in a very warm climate. Folks up North....would want a lesser viscosity.

Rotella is the only way to go. Best oil for the money. Good for diesels, porsches and Land Cruisers.

^^^^^^^^^ Agree Rotella is mighty good, but sometimes Delo (also good) is on sale for quite a bit less money. I buy either in the 2.5 gallon jug. So I will gladly put either in all of my vehicles, even equipment with small engines.

I have been using T-6 but I believe in the "synthetic slips past worn seals" theory too. Your consumption is likely valve seals, so no biggie, just add oil. In your case I vote Rotella T 15-40. The diesel oils have more zinc which is a great thing as well. Don't feel bad about the post. I'll take a new member oil question over no new member any day.

Mobil 1 5W-30 (all 4 Toyotas use it) and a Toyota Filter in each.
Never an engine failure, 3 are 200K miles plus.
Just my stats, can likely get away with cheaper oil in all, but run to 7000 miles so it's cheap to begin with.

Delo 400 or Rotella 15w40 here. No issues. It's a tractor motor...

You have a lot of miles, run what you like. I like a bit more viscosity than recommended so in your poll, I voted for the Mobil1 0W-40. I use that or the 15W-50 in my 80. I think, without any science, that Mobil1 is the best commonly available oil. I use it in everything. But it is not necessary.

But fresh clean oil is good. Pick a schedule for changes and don't deviate. Every 5K miles or once per year. Something like that. It probably doesn't matter that much what oil you use. The 1FZ is not particularly hard on oil so don't sweat it too much.

Rotella and be done with it!
