I bought the gears+caps this past month, and can't figure out where the gear is supposed to go. are there any instructions out there?

BreakerMark: there is a small white plastic gear box where the gear and white plug are located, that gear box can be seen by looking at the front side of your left front seat above the rails. It's driven by one of the seat motors. Start at the beginning of this thread (page 1) and read forward, here is a link to the instructions:

excellent product and write up. Pulled out my gears, found one shredded (pic attached), and have made my order for 2 sets of gear/caps, one for each seat.

Update: I serviced 3 seats - first took 2 hours, last was only 45 minutes. Would recommend the instructions emphasize being careful putting the shaft nut back on (use two tools) to avoid breaking the plastic gear. And recommend removal/cleaning/lubing of the rails.

Well that was all kinds of fun.

Waited patiently for 2 sets to arrive (2 end caps, 2 gears), they came today, took out seat and got to the install.

Changed out the gear (my end cap was still in place), put everything back together but I am pretty sure I over-tightend the stupid nuts on the jack screw.

Seat went forward, wouldn't go backwards. end cap starting working its way out. replaced end cap with the new one I just received today, tried to go forward and backward again, seat started moving off kilter. sat for a few minutes, decided to check out the 2nd gear in the driver seat.... it was pretty chewed up as well so I used my "new p/seat" gear on my driver seat, so now now it has 2 brand new gears.

Put seat back in, went forward a bit, stopped, wouldn't go backwards. got real low to look, rod on door side of seat wasn't turning at all. cursed a LOT removed seat again. took off gear box opened up, new gear was stripped on one side.

I didn't even look at the 2nd new gear, I am sure I jacked that one up too by over tightening the damn nuts on the jack screws.

So, tomorrow I will order 4 new gears. 2 for each seat. not sure why anyone would only need to replace the one gear........they are 20 years old.

I will NOT over-tighten the nuts on the jack screw rod thingys and I will not cry. The good news is.... i can't imagine that it would take me more than 15 minutes now that I have done it sooo many times.

**Sidenote** I didn't have any rubber washers.....in either gear box. wonder if this is a problem.

I wish more emphasis would have been given in the downloaded instructions not to tighten the nuts on the jack screws too much. I also wish I would have read all of these comments before I did my install.I know.... still way cheaper than a new seat, but dangit I am going to whine about it anyways.

Just had my driver side white cap fall out of the truck on to the road and roll into a huge sewer drain.:censor:

Just replaced inside gear and cap on '97 PS seat. Product worked great...amazed it even exists. So glad not to give toyota dealer any more of my $.
Wandered in the desert for a solid 30 minutes at which point I reread directions and posts from this thread. Could definitely do it in less than an hour if I had to repeat, but first time took nearly 3. A few highlights---many repeated from previous.

-Start with seat forward and up...difficult if not impossible to access otherwise.
-Seat upside down on a bench is great, but be careful of dropping small parts into underseat labyrinth.
-I didnt have a torch or long lighter on hand so dropped the gear in boiling water previous to pressing gear. It worked, but sketchy.
-Inspected second gear (outside PS)-was in perfect shape and was sealed, no cap. left in place
-Having seat pulled made me wishI was doing more seatwork: cushion replacement, covers, etc.
-Both of my rubber washers were on outside of the gear housing. Seems like there is some variation between years?

Probably should do the drivers side while fresh in the mind. Either way Im probably buying 2 more sets just to have. GREAT PRODUCT!

I never knew there was a thread for this, I read most of, it I did mine 2 weeks ago, I just figured it out, pretty simple great thread should be sticky in the FAQ area

not to knock these gears at all since i've purchased and used them; just wondering with 3D printers coming on line and getting cheaper if sourcing small parts like this will get easier and easier?

Well as you know 3D printers is what was used to make these available in the first place, now almost 10 years ago. Then transitioned to more traditional manufacturing, in response to higher quality and quantity demands. Just as it should be. :)

I ordered some gear two weeks ago but my question is my seat slides back a forth about a 1/8 when I stop and go. Does this have to do with the gears or is there something else needed.

I've been working on my passenger seat and same thing - no rubber washer(s) (#1 and #2 in pic below). Mine were rather a single black color washer for #1 and 3 metal washer stacked to replace the rubber washer- I assume the PO attempted to repair this. The other side of the worm drive had the same thing - stacked washers

pic taken from previous thread of that I believe is correct.

What mine has

Driver's side working so doubt will remove it just to see if the rubber washers are in place.

Either way, my first attempt failed and stripped 2 new gears. Will be ordering more soon. Thank you Gamiviti for offering these. I think it was a combo of not being precise with alignment, over tightening the threaded-rod nuts and very gummy worm drive, dirty threaded rods and filthy rails. I'm going to clean everything and make a 2nd attempt. I'm concerned the worm drive gear is fouled as well.

Your bottom photo is what I found on my 94, no rubber washers instead the two washers on both sides of the thrust bearing/plastic retainer shown in your right hand fingers.

Interesting. I've found a nylon washer and a hard rubber grommet I may try and make work and see if that helps as substitute.

Thanks for replying

Off topic maybe but... Could this plastic gear be made? It's from the pwr antenna seems p common fail I would like to rehab it and have an antenna again

I've noticed that my seat does something like that too, but it only moves back and forth an 1/8 of an inch when it's adjusted all the way to the rear of it's travel. Just as an FYI I've replaced both cap and gear, even after replacing them my seat still moves back and forth.
