Where do you start on a bumper replacement project? I dont need OEM, just wondering how ya'll have found either aftermarket or custom bumpers for the FJ62?

piece of box tube works
depends on what look you are after

4Plus makes the most bombproof stuff I've seen. Dave is the real deal.

Trail Tailor makes top notch bumpers with custom swing outs if that’s what you’re after. He’s a member here and makes other 60 series parts as well. No affiliation, just a happy customer.
Thanks for the lead

Trail Tailor....simple and much heftier than the ARB I have on my 4Runner. License plate flips up to expose winch line.

Im gonna get flamed here, but IDC… anyways..

ARB might be the only mainstream bumper that is actually engineered. It may not be the most “hefty” but also that could save your spine from some G forces in an accident.

My $.02 is to do the rear bumper first. Those plastic end caps on stock bumpers are a joke. Regardless of what you decide about swingouts, a receiver hitch and strong recover points are a must. Consider rear quarter panel protection as well. The rear bumper is the most used piece of armour. My front bumper is just a shelf for tools while doing maintenance. I hope I never use it as armour.

Not build just based on what looks good and is the heaviest duty.

I’m guessing .. Based on some science/testing with safety in mind
ARB does do verification and validation on newer vehicles so there bumpers work with modern SRS technologies. For the 60 series, this point is almost moot as the safety technology incorporated into these trucks back then was not as sophisticated as we have today. Bumpers are capable of providing the first level of energy dissipation in the event of a crash but for many these days the use case of off-road performance ranks higher than say a 60mph head on collision. Frankly I’d be more concerned with seatbelts that are more than 35 years old, along with their associated mechanical connections.

That is why I'm a huge fan of ARB - the bumper they made for the 3rd gen 4Runner/1st gen Taco had crumple zones built into the mounts so that the airbags don't deploy late causing more damage to the occupants.
