Hello guys(and girls) finaly the time has come to replace my old faitfull 77' B with a 3B from a BJ73 from 1988 and i will put a garret turbo from a volvo on it together with an intercooler from a Misubishi EVO:hhmm:.I bought this 77' BJ40 here last year in Panama from it first owner:clap:,the car was bone stock except from a louisy golden paint job and front disc brakes and an aftermarket airco. The first things i did to it was to put a powersteering on it(with a Hilux box) but right now i am changing this one in favor of a more direct steering from a 70 series steering box.Ofcourse i had to lift the car,so i ordered a 4" Hell for stout lift kit, combined with 35" MT's,some cheapy aftermarket seats, bestop softop with doors, built a rollcage for it and so on.Oh yeah after the engine is installed i am going to put some HJ61 axles on it with original toyota cable lockers:steer:

But first some pictures of how i bought my ride;)

joekatana.... will your turbo hitting the bonnet? A bit too high.. and what is the A/R ratio of the turbo housing? I heard the best is .63...

let me know

regards

x2 on the turbo being too tall for the hood. Would be great to find out there's that much room though, because I might be needing it when I put the 3B into our 40...

Those are 70 series axles? I love the cable diff lock levers. Too cool for words.

Wel about the hight of turbo,my friend Redstang 410 on the forum here had just build a BJ42 with a 2H turbo and my setup is 0.5 cm lower as his.And he could close the hood,i measured it from the valve cover from the 2H untill the top of the turbo and did the same on my engine(hoping that the 2H and the3B are the same height:meh:).
If it does'nt close it's no big deal as i am going to put a scoop on my hood to get some more fresh air in this hot climate:cool:.

The axles are from a HJ61 that i bought in Belgium but it had a ratle in the engine and when i opend it the pistons and cilinders where damaged:bang:,so i only kept the axles and sold the rest.

Here are some pictures of the BJ73:hillbilly:(what is leftover from it:whoops:) so i could test the engine before shipping it to the other side of the world

Actualy i don't know anything on A/R ratio are whatsoever:eek:

As i was talking to Tapage today whe do things different in Europe nobody(almost:D) uses pyrometer or boostmeters or other stuff that you read about everyday here.I think this is because diesel engines are relatively cheap and easy to find in europe.:hhmm:
But what i do know is that this turbo works EXCELLENT on a 3B ,this is a turbo from a VW/AUDI/VOLVO 2.4 TDI engine, and whe use and abuse :grinpimp:them allot back home.

But to be honest with a litlle help from Tapage and Redstang 410 i am going to use all the gauges like Boost,Pyro and so one,Hey nobody is ever to old to learn something new right:cheers:

Have a new turbo manifold for 3B for sale

This is how it looks after insulation

Nice set up.. did you cut a hole on top of the hood for the intercooler? I like it , reminds me of Subaru STI top mount intercooler

Hey nice Turbo setup, but i am building a 40 series so there is more then anough space above the engine ,so i prefer to do it the cheapy:hillbilly: way, and my intercooler is to big to mount ontop of the engine so i will go upfront with that

very intersting read.
tapage will keep you on the straight and narrow.

THAT was a bush truck, it would have been a blast to boot around in.

Gold looks okay but the silver trim <shiver>

your truck is going to be unstoppable when you are done (of course if you do get stuck it will take a bulldozer to get you out!!)

The Turbo it's going to do it well .. JoeKatana know he's stuff .. actually we are impresed how he can drive go and back from our muddy trails only with a set of chains and B engine ..

Hard to imagine how it will do now with lockers and turbo ..

BTW I'm jelaous about those cable locker axles ..

A 12H-T woudl be my dream .. but are not my Cruiser .. :hillbilly:

I promise a few videos of the test ride .. :D

Thank you for this kind words Tapage:beer:
But things are about to change until now i was always the underdog with the Panama 4X4 Club;the guy with the smallest engine, smallest tyres, the only one without lockers and so on.
So anywhere i passed one of you guys it looked like a miracle:D
When my car is ready, whe are going to battle with the same tools,so i will have to prove myself one more time:steer:,damn the pressure is about to get higher and higher:meh:

being the underdog is a perfect place to be, i enjoy that position. smallest engine, smallest tires and when you actually conquer a obstacle that the big boys had trouble surpassing then it is a badge of honor.

being the biggest badest truck out there takes the challenge away.

driver skill, my friend, THAT is the best advantage anyone can have...
