A guy who lives nearby had this cruiser sitting in the field and I had asked him about it 10 years ago and he was unwilling to part with it. I met with him again about a month ago and chatted with him about my 78 BJ40 and how I had recently rebuilt the B motor in it and was beginning work on its body, he then realized I was a cruiserhead and when I asked him about his FJ40 again he offered it to me for free. I of course agreed completely! (along with many thanks of course). He told me he was getting to old to turn it back into something he would do anything with and said it sat for roughly 20 years and he parked it because the clutch master cylinder went out and he was just done driving the cruiser at that point in his life.
I brought it home, put a new clutch master cylinder on it, a fuel pump, a carb rebuild kit, new wires and plugs and points, cleaned the gas tank out, replaced all filters and oil of course, threw a battery in it and it started right up. I put $155 into it and I have a running a driving cruiser!! It does have some major rust below the ambulance doors and on a couple body mounts along with the rust on the rear quarter panels, but I couldn't be happier with it!
Just keep your eyes out for cruisers sitting in fields/barns and dont be afraid to ask about them, all they could do is say no, who knows you might end up getting one handed to you!
The free 76 FJ40 is on the right sitting next to my 78 BJ40.
