I was hoping to dig up a few more pics of Moab in the mid 1980s. still looking. Those who were there in the 1970s and 1980s (or earlier) knew what a magical place it was. The characters that lived there awesome too-One of my family members lived there was an old uranium miner that had worked for Charlie Steen and knew Edward Abbey.

Agree with you 100% on Moab. I had a job near there and lived in Moab during 1977-78. It was a cool place for sure; "magical" is actually a pretty fair description. Really nice and open people, some eccentric characters to be sure, and pretty girls. Saw Ed Abbey in a bar one time; he was a strange one.

My wheels at the time was an old Ford F-250 with a granny low 1st gear and a Hi-lift jack:

Went everywhere, on all kinds of trails in that truck because I didn't know any better. Only got stuck bad once; I don't remember where now, but there was a girl involved (that I was trying to impress, LOL).

It depresses me to go to Moab now; it is not recognizable as the same place back then. And so damned commercial.

I haven't posted in this thread since '08 on the first page, but I just found another picture. It's my sister and I standing with my grandfather with the 40 in the background. Farther back you can see a 1951 Willy's Jeep. The picture was taken in the summer of 1980 (developed in Jan of 1981 according to the corner of the pic) when I was 5.

This is another rig that made it from the San Francisco Bay Area up the Alcan Highway to Valdez, Alaska (and back). My friend's 1965 FJ45. He still owns it today. He bought the camper specifically for the Alaska trip (he promptly removed it when he returned). The FJ45 performed flawlessly. This photo was taken a few weeks before they embarked. Photo circa 1986 Castro Valley, California.

These pictures should be titled "Why I am the way I am". When I was little, my parents' marriage was coming apart due mainly to my Mom's (undiagnosed at the time) bi-polar disorder. Whenever they would fight or my Mom would start screaming, my Dad would grab me and we'd jump in the Land Cruiser. Sometimes, when the top was off, he would buy us a couple of hamburgers and we'd go park by the airport and watch the jets come in right over our heads. On weekends, we'd go on trail rides with the club just the two of us. At that time, it was unusual for a man to wheel alone with a 2 year old child, but he loved it. He always promised me that when my feet reached the pedals, I would be allowed to drive. when I was 9 years old, he fulfilled that promise. Fast foward 31 years a lot has changed some good, some bad. But last weekend, when Dad and I took our FJ40's 'wheeling I realized that the best things haven't changed at all. If you've spent time in your 'cruiser with your father or your son, you understand.

Haven’t been able to find many pictures of it. That was back before I was a social media whore..

Interesting setup for the mirrors. Wonder how those held up on the trip to Alaska? Those long of arms off the camper probably didn't fair well on washboard roads. I see he had also updated the doors to the 75+ style. Probably a good choice for the Alcan highway. While I like the vent windows in the early style the two piece doors are a rattle trap compared to the later style. I was reminded of this last weekend when our local club had a classic run and took my 70 FJ40. Have OEM weatherstripping but still trying figure a way to get the old weatherstripping off without destroying the paint. This one will keep the original doors my 68 I replaced the doors thirty-five years ago.

According to Red Rock 4-wheelers this trail rates a 7 and requires a minimum 35" tires and front/rear lockers....unless you have a Land Cruiser....

I Second this. This picture (& of course the fate of the poor wolf) - out right sucks. I remember seeing this pic previously, and was totally sick for a week or more. Now that it's been brought back to my mind, I'm deeply sick again. What a stupid shame us humans actually are. ~Skydog

curious; anyone ever hear a wolf call on a full moon night? I have.....in Idaho on the Main Salmon 4-5 years ago. I was camping out of a raft in the Frank Church Wilderness. Man, what an unbelievable experience that everyone should have! I’ll never forget it. Dixie my Lab stuck her head out of the tent with a WTF look.

I’ll get off it, this isn’t a PETA site. We all love Land Cruisers.....
