Looking for a FJ40 OEM Front Axle Differential - Third Member
I can't believe how many of these i have given away or thrown away and now I need one.
Hoping to find one in the San Diego area if possible.

Is there any difference between the front and rear diffs? I have a spare differential if you need one. I’m a bit of a drive from you up the 15 and 210.

They are the same unless someone got in there with an axle swap or something..

You didn’t say what year (I don’t know what year 40 you have) 4.11 up to 79 then 3.70

Thanks guys. Now I’m trying to figure out if there was an axle swap since the front and rear are not the same.

As other have mentioned, the gear ratios can be different from yr to yr, along with the pinion flanges and some internals like coase and fine spline pinions. The 3rds housings should be the same for FJ40's, 60's and 55's. Stk Frt and rears should be the same. I'm sure there maybe other models that are the same too, but those models I mentioned are what I'm familiar with. Do you have pics of what your working with?

If the 3rd in question is smaller and from your frt you may have a mini truck frt axle adapted to your 40. If so, the good is you'll have large pattern knuckles and larger birfs on the mini truck frt end. The bad would be, you'll be looking for a FJ40 or FJ55 frt end along with the 3rd.

It looks like same number of bolts but different pattern. I will take pics of both.

If you end up buying a whole third member and don’t have need for the guts, I might be interested in the 3.70 ring and pinion
