The OP is correct that the cooling fan does not come on (even when you first shut off the engine) unless the sensor has reached about 160 degrees F. It is a simple snap switch that snaps to open (off) after the temp at the sensor drops below...

This is everything that came out of my 79 for the carb fan. That single wire connector in the middle of the pic is the one that is used for the temp sensor.
hoping to figure out what plug on the harness goes to the temperature switch to actuate the carb fan. I had hoped my Feb80 FJ40 matched a 82 I got but the plug from the 82 doesn’t match my 80 harness.
I’ve researched off and on and seen a lot...
So, I can't speak to a 79 specifically, but I did not have to shorten my 1982 manual steering column to install a factory fj40 steering box.

Haven’t visited this in awhile. Flew home for a conservation snow goose hunt and grabbed a couple pictures. Snow was melted so dad has easy access again.
