As the saying goes, "All good things are worth waiting for." My 40 was the fortunate recipient of one of the headers "in the wild" as it was used during the design process to assure everything was built correctly and fit perfectly. I was able to see first hand how much effort went into these! My rotted out exhaust ended up being a gift to us all, since Jim decided to build an entire exhaust to go with the header. My '77 doesn't just run better, but it sounds amazing! I have already put it in storage but will record a video of how great the sound is ASAP and post it up. In the meantime, we all love pics here, so here they are! I will post up header pics first and then the exhaust system in the following posts :)

I think the fit can best be described as beautiful!
We did a LOT of work to get the fit to this point.
@Dianna was key in this process when she lent us her 40, and before her @bottombracket .
Thank you both!

It would be great if the complete kit comes with all gaskets, new header bolts, clamps, and any other misc. hardware to make the installation go as smooth as possible.
Noted, we will have a full BOM for each product.

Not seeing a gas tank in the above pics... exhaust kit for '78 and older only, or will there be a post '78 kit as well?
Dianna's 40 is a '77.

I am not as familiar w/ a Square and their differences underneath.

Our first priority will be to get this first batch of headers completed and get everything in place to sell.

If we can locate a Square to try a '78-earlier exhaust on, we will try it out.

If you need any more motivation to pull the trigger, the owner of the header shop had no clue what an FJ40 was until he saw me driving into the shop. He gets to work on some incredible builds and has his products on some amazing cars, quite a few at SEMA. Well... guess who fell in love with my 40 and now wants one?!!! Lots of thought went into this on every aspect and I know there were quite a few challenges along the way. I am happy to see this is finally getting close to market! I know it was a labor of love that got it to where it is right now.

On the later models the exhaust went under the frame rail before the skid plate, along the outside of the frame rail, and then back under the frame rail after the skid plate. It continues over the rear axle and the across the back, where the muffler is located, to exit on the right side.

I was curious about this so just looked at another vendors website who sells a header and found this: Fits 1969 to 12/78 FJ40 without emission controls. Can fit 1979 to 1984 FJ40 and 1980 to 1987 FJ60 vehicles without emission controls, by modifying header pipe to fit your vehicle's exhaust system. Works with column shift linkage and floorshift models. Header will not fit with PTO Winch. If you have a PTO winch, I assume the same would hold true for this header as well. Also interesting to note this might fit 60's as well!

I’m interested in a set of headers and full exhaust kit for my 1979 Fj40(US version), currently still carbureted but considering going to FI in the near future. Any idea on total cost yet? Thanks in advance for any additional information.

That's a great picture @Dianna , thanks!

I do not see a cat in that picture, but I am guessing it was the addition of a cat that caused them to route the exhaust outside the frame rails. I am going to further guess that the development work to develop a system that will either accept the original cat, or accommodate a variety of replacement cats is beyond what we want to take on in the near term.

As for PTO winch, there is too much going on there on the exhaust side of the engine bay to run all the header primaries through there unfortunately.

60 series - yes. We have had a few folks post up in here that they ran a Downey or Mark's version of this header on their 60. We also shipped a prototype to a well respected elder on here and they assessed the fit on a 60. IIRC they gave it a thumbs up!

Good things...

I should mention that my skid plate was cut and BFH-ed prior to this to fit the exhaust above it. You would have to alter your skid plate to install and hopefully you will spend a little more time accomplishing that than my PO did!

Wow, your PO really did some ugly work on the skid plate to run the exhaust.

Our header manufacturer cleaned things up quite nicely!

This is what we like about them - they are meticulous in their execution.

The final product should be stellar. I can't wait until we get our shipment. We will get some product photos and get those out to you all!

Facts!

We really like our manufacturer. I know @gonzopancho has elaborated earlier in the thread about their capabilities. They design and manufacturer some very high-end product. I am sure this is part of why the owner can't resist the allure of a 40! They have been very receptive to all of our tweaks for a perfect fit. I will brag on @S14B23Racer - he is in charge of all of our industrial design, and before I met him he worked at BMW NA. Product excellence is in everything he does.

I hope that you realize that all of us who are anxiously awaiting the product release are salivating like Pavlov's Dog every time you post these amazing pics!

The saliva is real! I absolutely cannot wait until I get word that we have inventory heading our way...

Thank you so much for your interest!

I will mark you down as interested in a header - please see the other notes in here about exhaust for '79 and later 40 series.

Pricing - my goals include having a commerce thread in the Vendor section by Thanksgiving and shipping product in time for Christmas.

At this point in November that is sounding a little aggressive.

I’m already down for a header, would like to add the full exhaust for a 1978 2F…

Old girl is sitting ready for a new exhaust.

Yes... I have an '80 and that is how it is configured. I was asking about the exhaust kit coming out with the header. The current exhaust is susceptible to being crushed (where it crosses under the frame to the cat). I was thinking that, once the header is on, I will need to take it to a custom exhaust specialist to get it routed above the frame, but if a kit is being developed for later models... I would be interested.

Oh man, she does look ready!

I have marked you down for an exhaust for your 40 - thank you for your interest.

What PS pump are you running there?
