ECC is cracked.... Plainly obvious. Behind clutch pedal. All that f*ing work. Did not realize the ECC would have anything to do with it. As soon as I opened it up plainly cracked. Will let you know how that works out......

Whats the ECC, sorry you lost me. Electronic Cruise Control? Just teasing but wondering about our acronym.

Emissions control computer..... Under/next to clutch. Not sure if that is the problem?? But it sure is cracked.

Yep, that did it. New ECC board, behind under clutch. Fan works!!

Great work, maybe I can find time to get after mine this weekend.

Hope this thread helps another..... Never would have considered that other board would have an effect on the carb fan.

Where did you find another board?

$pecter, $75.00. This is not the passenger side board.... That one is $100. My cracked board was the Emissions Control Computer. Which is different than the Fan Control Computer (Board)

If you look at Haynes Schematic. It's on first page of diagram.....

Hope it helps???

Dont know if this is in the engine manual, because I dont have that one yet; but this may be some info not seen elsewhere. For the 78 model, 40 and 55.

That is the best info we have to date on these. Especially for 78. Great addition to the thread!

Good thread I just discovered. I removed my carb fan because of the snorkle and am wondering if one of the 76 Cali fans would work on this setup and restore performance. Any one have this setup? Thanks.

Probably can't hurt honestly.

Also, I wanted to post in this long running thread about my carb cooling fan. The PO had removed the thermistor when he removed the exhaust manifold and put in headers. When I went back to the manifold I reattached the sensor but the fan still didn't work. I replaced the sensor and bingo it worked! I always liked to hear the fan running after I parked the truck.
Well, after installing a secondary fuse block and melting my fusible link in the process I bricked my radio and replaced it. It is winter now and I noticed that it never came on, I chalked it up to the cold temps. After driving for some long distance and it still wouldn't come on I grew suspicious, I broke out the wiring diagram and I forgot about the small 5A inline fuse. It was fried and I replaced it. Bingo! Back in business.
I do notice it is easier to crank after turning it off. Best of luck to everyone fighting this fight!

Mine was solved when I had the solder connections "reflowed" on the carb fan relay (passenger side in cab). It seems vibration loosens connections where the plug actually is soldered to the circuit board. Maybe wiring loom vibrates enough to weaken? Anyway, it's back working like when I bought my baby in '78! Didn't work for about 5 years, but didn't notice any running difference. Bugged me though! And I hated having wasted space under hood with something dead...

can you pm me the name of the firm or place that repaired your boards? long story, but i have 3-4 boards that dont have obvoius damage and would like to get one working out of the extras i have.

Also wondering if anyone else has succesfully had old boards fixed for a reasonable
price?

I think this was one of my first post I put up here when I got my fj40 a couple if years ago. Had no idea all this other great info would be added here.

Anyways; since repairing my fan several years ago (not really a repair) just replacing that very hidden fuse behind the heat duct work mine has worked perfect.

Having this fan working has never made the fj crank for me every time with no issues where as before in the summer it would vapor lock on me.

Cheers to great info posted
