Installation tip for folks, before you install the PS pump pull the pressure control valve and check the o-rings to ensure they are right position but more importantly check to make sure flow piston and spring are there.

I got the recommend pump from autozone got it put in and no power steering, from the outside it looked fine, but when we checked it we discovered that the flow piston was missing. More than likely this was a one off but it is easier and cleaner and takes just a minute to check on the bench. Also if you are still running your emission equipment either get a plug for the top mounting stud or trim it back so it doesn't rub on the hose from the air pump.

I just want to thank Georg

I got my Saginaw kit today. Shipping was fast..from CA to VA...communication was awesome! One thing I appreciate about Georg and his company is Customer Service...a dying platform nowadays. His company understand the 3P business rule: People, Product, Profit...in that order. A dedicated customer. Thanks Georg.

UPDATE!!

Cant seem to get mine to run correctly.... This is the second pump i put in since i didn't get the pulley on right last time. My Pump is still whining can feel it up the steering shaft on 1/2 to 3/4 of the turn radius. I have burped and bled the system a few times. I'm at a loss now with what to do.

1. When i lock it in the position it whines at and open the hood and open the top to the pump you can hear it coming from there.
2. Is it a belt issue? too tight or too loose i set it at the recommended deflection.

Any help or suggestions is appreciated.

Just figured I would update everyone. Finally got to the bottom of solving my problem. Turns out after the 3rd pump I finally got a good one. I purchased 2 re manufactured pumps from Advanced and both had defects they were still whining. Finally before replacing steering box i gave yet another saginaw pump a try and it is running great. So my advice beware of the remanufactured ones you may need a few of them.

Bought the set up from a guy that ended up going oem. Removing the oem pump and bracket was a little more difficult than I thought it was going to be. It made me really want to desmog. But so far I’m very pleased to have real power steering. I had to improvise on the orings a bit. Thank you Georg and Willard

Is there a write-up anywhere for performing this conversion? I've consulted every FJ60/2F FSM I can find and none of them appear to even acknowledge that the power steering pump is actually mounted in the engine bay, let alone show how it attaches to the bracket and the bracket to the engine.

Edit: Never mind, I got the old one out. I'm on hold now on installing the new one until I get the bolts recommended to replace the temporary plugs: "For Standard thread pumps bolt size is 3/ 8 x 16, for metric threads use 10m x 1.5m. Bolt length is 1/ 2 inch."

Not-even-close-to-pro tip: I didn't have to remove the smog pump, but I did have to loosen its tensioner to get the OEM bracket off.

I've hit a major roadblock with this conversion. The Autozone #7023 pump comes with a standard 5/8-18 pressure hose outlet fitting, not metric. I've identified three alternative pumps at Autozone that have the required 16mm X 1.5 fitting, but they also say "Power Steering Pump Outlet Attachment Type: O-Ring" so now I'm concerned they won't work -- isn't the fitting on the HP line that will connect to it an inverted flare?

So: does anyone know if any of these will work:

If they won't work, can anyone recommend a pump that will? Everyone keeps saying "just get one that fits a Volvo" but which model? What year? None of the pumps I pull up at Autozone that fit a Volvo are the canned ham style Saginaw. So can anyone recommend a part number for this pump with a metric fitting?

I've heard from two sources - a speed shop tech and Georg - that they're just threading the Toyota M16x1.5 inverted flare hose into the 5/8"-18 (M15.8x1.4) inverted flare Saginaw pump.

Of course Man-A-Fre says you need to purchase $160 in hoses and AN adapters instead.

I would just go get a high pressure hose made...one end with a Sag fitting and the other end metric to fit the Toyota steering box. Have to have it made but s/b quickly sourced.

This way you will always have quick access to the 7023 pump if necessary in the future.

From what I understand, the FJ60 gear box has a 17x1.5 high pressure fitting which I'm having a difficult time locating - except one ebay seller who has an adapter to -6AN.

I think converting 16x1.5 o-ring to 16x1.5 flare (as are found on the later Saginaw pumps) with a small brass flare adapter would be a better option than forcing the threads.

JTO sells a hose made up with 17mm on one end and 5/8" on the other for $59.

Yeah, Georg told me the same thing. I just couldn't do it (lack of proper tools -- or cojones?) so I ended up having a local shop customize the pump-side fitting on the HP hose to fit the pump. I'm back on the road again with no problems and no leaking PS fluid.

The difference is night and day... and saginaws are very, very very easy to find, and they dont leak, and... you get the point. But to the purist... of couse, if it aint TEQ its crap.
Meh, purists never wheeled their trucks, lol. at least not a 60 with that wack-a$$ stock steering set up. GM 1-ton all the way! Would LOVE to find this Saginaw steering box set up for my 12h-t.

I got my Saginaw adapter and pulley from Georg @ Valley Hybrids on Thursday and churched it up a bit before throwing a coat of black paint on everything. Decided while I was in there to replace all the front cooling hoses and other belts and got to drive it last night. Very impressed with the assist and of course, no more unwanted moaning.
