Just tried to pull the spacer. Won't seat without it. Maybe this isn't a 77 2F? I compared the new pump to the oem one and the arm sticks out about a 1/4" farther than the new one, but that was for a 73 F. The website lists the pump I bought as fitting 58-78. Add that to the spacer fitting 79's and forward, seems like maybe this is the wrong pump? I looked at the ones for 79's and they look like they have a 3rd fuel line on it, I presume for a return? The hook ups for the lines are not gonna work with my set up on a 79 or newer pump. I see one listed that looks just like the OEM one I have but for a 77,78 and it has the same line connections as my set up. Btw, the 73 oem pump I have had the fuel input line going straight out the side towards the back and it interferes with the oil cooler, so I have to get a different one regardless.

Lastly the play in the arm on the new one as compared to the old one is much less. The old one moves a quarter inch maybe when you pump it, but the new one seems like it's half that. This has me thinking the style below may fit the bill...or I'm just barely out of tolerance and not hitting the cam shaft. Maybe file the spacer down a little?

Well, to further complicate this, Cruiser Outfitters has 2 very similar looking OEM pumps. One for 9/73 - 9/77 and another for 9/77 - 8/78. They both have the fuel inlet in a place that won't interfere with the cooler. This all presumes this in in fact a 77. I just asked ABQCruiser Mark when his pig was born, as this motor is his original 2F.

Also just called Cruiser outfitters and they said 77 is tricky year on the fuel pumps. Gotta have the right one! of course

Mark said based on the VIN and Frame stamp it's Aug or Sept of 77, so right in the middle of the date range for the change! Ordered the 9/77 - 8/78 OEM pump from Cruiser Outfitters, as they had no better idea than I did. The aftermarket one they sell that looks identialc to the aftermarket one I have was good through 9/77 and that didn't work so we all guessed the latter one. Taking a bit of an educated guess on this one. Sure as heck hope that does it! With my luck, it'll be wrong and I'll end up ordering another $200 fuel pump.

Education is not inexpensive! Get your Pig running and join us at the Pig Party July 7-10 in northern NM. Details in the PP2022 thread or Mark can help fill you in.

Success! And failure? New fuel pump came yesterday and that was it! Engine running great. Did the 20 minute 2000 rpm break-in I read about.

Unfortunately, the triple groove pully that came with this engine is a little wobbly. So much so it's wobbling the water pump pully, which I can't imagine is good for the pump. The 2 groove on my old F was steady so I think Im gonna swap them. Never tried to take on of these off and I'm guessing it's gonna be a pita. Hate to have to drain and pull the radiator already but think it's the right move. I'll try to post a video to get other thoughts on how bad it is.

Also have a tiny leak at the back corner of the oil pan. Hoping it's a cork gasket and might seal up with some hot cold cycles? Maybe I need to re-torque the oil pan? Not sure what's common on a freshly rebuilt engine.

She runs though. Great feeling!

Got the pully of the F and realized it's a double but the outer ring is about half the width. Not gonna work. Guess I gotta track down another pully. Tightened the oil pan bolts a bit, but no luck...looks like a tiny little leak right at the corner. Added some permatex over it all. We shall see.

The pully wobble wasn't as bad as I first thought so I took it for a spin. Has a little hesitation right when I rev, then it kicks in. Had that once before and got it worked out, but don't remember what I did. Gotta dial the tune in a bit I guess.

Glad you fingered it out!
My 40 is a '78, 9/77 build. I just had the fuel pump off so I was going to point you to those pictures, but it sounds like you are in the money now!

Does anyone know the story on this style 2 groove pully from my old engine? It's looks just like this one...the groove on the front one seems very slim. I assume I can't use that to run an ac compressor, but curious what you all know about this
