Old crank seal coming out

Cam seals and water pump on here. I had also found that whoever did the belt last had left the 8mm bolt/stud loose that also hold the serpentine belt tensioner.

Cam gears back on and torqued to 80ft lbs.

I decided to put a new starter in so got some new intake gaskets and at this point I said screw it im going to go ahead and do it all!

I pulled the valve covers to replace the gaskets and do the tube seals. Someone had already beat me to the gaskets once before indicated by the black Toyota fipg instead of the factory installed gray stuff. I went ahead and slapped the new ones on since I’d already bought them.

I was really amazed at how clean the valve train is. Cleanest 2uzfe I’ve seen yet.

8 new denso coil packs and a drop of fipg at the rear caps and front corners and it’s back together. Oh and almost forgot the new pcv grommet and valve.

At this point I was working in the engine out of the back of my rental pick up truck

Consider engine mounts, so easy at this point.
Did you happen to check value lash (gap)?
Was that a tube of 1282B FIPG for the coolant housing?
103 FIPG for oil (head covers)?

Only thing missing is new fuel pressure regular and testing/cleaning/rebuilding fuel injectors. It's going to purr like a kitten;)

When to Clean or Replace fuel injectors

I used the 103 black for the valve cover and the thermo housing. I haven’t seen it to be an issue with being degraded by coolant. I actually generally use hondabond on all my stuff but I didn’t have any out here with me and probably ten tubes of it at home.

Engine mounts were good and are easy enough to replace after the fact if they fail.

Valve lash I did not check. As far as the injectors I don’t really see a need to clean and test them at that mileage. I guess you can say I’m opinionated when it comes to that stuff but my opinion stems from a decade of turning wrenches as a dealer tech. Don’t even get me started on seafoam :rolleyes:

No plans with the old engine. I’m going to strip it down of hardware and anything else useable like the pick up and oil pan and timing covers etc. and scrap the rest.
 
Saturday morning I got to the auto skills shop at 8 am to insure I’d get first dibs on the two post lift. I didn’t realize however that they actually opened at 10am and not 9am so, I spent an hour in the parking lot taking apart the antenna motor to extract the old broken reel and install this guy.

On Friday night my brother had driven down from Castaic California to lend a hand and provide some moral support. He started with taking some artsy fartsy photos while I was tearing it apart.

The truck was super filthy from hundreds of miles of dirt roads where I work so I started by giving it a nice 180 degree bath with the hot pressure washer, focusing my attention on the engine bay and under carriage. Although I got a bit carried away blasting the gold paint and bumper stickers off the back bumper.

I decided to use the lift arm to pull the engine straight up and out of the bay but that idea kinda backfired on me when the lift maxed out and the engine needed another 18” to clear the radiator support. :bang: So out came the hoist...

When I pulled the engine I came across a missing ac compressor bolt which was pretty crucial since these trucks only have three bolts to begin with. I also found a missing trans cooler line bracket bolt. Fortunately I’d brought the compressor bolts from home from my donor truck anticipating some hacked up s*** since it had a junk yard motor. The cooler line bolt was a common 8mm.


I also found the front diff breather to be missing...I’ll have to bring one of these out next time I come out.
The old rack is removed. The bushings in it were absolutely trashed.

Great job Roma! I second the fuel injectors and gaskets. Mine were brittle when I changed my starter. I broke one injector and replaced. But I did get all the gaskets changed around the injectors. You can always do them from the top of engine later. No biggy. Glad to see you are back in a 100
