Engine locked up 00 land cruiser build up

Saturday I ended up getting the old engine pulled and everything swapped over onto my new one like the harness and manifolds.

Sunday morning I started out with swapping out the steering racks.

Now normally if I was going in this deep into a truck I’d replace the radiator as a preventative measure but this one appeared to have a recently installed csf brand radiator with a new set of gates hoses and fancy worm drive clamps on the hoses and trans cooler lines. Now csf wouldn’t be my first choice but I decided to run the radiator but ditch the aftermarket hoses and put some factory hoses and clamps back on. I also made a note to pick up some pcv breather hoses and the two coolant lines at the throttle body. The heater tees I’d replaced when I got it but I do want to do two heater hoses at that spot as well.

Anyway by about 5 pm Sunday she was up and running I put two gallons of the Toyota red in and will top the rest off with water once I replace those other couple hoses next time out.

The power steering burped fluid all over the damn place so I had to give it another wash.

Great job Roma! I second the fuel injectors and gaskets. Mine were brittle when I changed my starter. I broke one injector and replaced. But I did get all the gaskets changed around the injectors. You can always do them from the top of engine later. No biggy. Glad to see you are back in a 100

Interesting I never had an issue with them on my other white or black 100 but I’ll keep that in mind. Easy enough do later I guess. It’s nice to be back in a 100 for sure that thing rides like a dream.

Man you are fast. Finding engine while on the road traveling, found a rental shop with lift and still manged to get job done in under a month. Good job!

Any thoughts on why it sucked one of #8 valves?

Yeah Roma makes us all look/feel lazy :coffee:
I suppose the timing belt job on the old engine was hacked and valves we're out of timing really bad. Not sure, you don't see the 2UZ shet the bed very often.

Roma, so do you register this truck with AL or AZ?
Also, looks like some OME shocks are a bonus. Does it have a small lift?

Thanks man. No clue really. I only put about 3k miles on the truck and only tell tale signs it had was the excessive crank pressure. It had good power, no noises, misfires, or anything else until the last 20 miles or so before it went.

Jason I put the lift off my old white truck on this one BDS t bars, OME springs and shocks, diff drop and all just still need to put the adjustable control arms on it. I have it registered in Alabama but I’m going to keep it out there for a while I think. I really don’t think the timing on it was out because it drove great for 3k miles.

No CEL coming on before it gave up either?
Seems like the computer would be throwing a code or two?

Crank pressure must have blown the rings and it went from there.

it developed a misfire on cylinder one and then random misfire then locked up all within 20 or 30 miles

My guess burnt valve due to lean fuel mixture at #8.
Or
Longer term oil issue for lack of proper service.
Or
Old replacement engine (not the new LX) was weather sitting in junk yard and valve & seat and valve guides damaged. If heads pulled or scoped I'd think multiple cylinders would show some issue from rust pits if this the case. I've found water get into old fuel injectors lower seals and or past the intake gasket, when these washed or left out exposed like in front end damaged where hood's up. Water will set in intake port of closed valves and damage guide, start up smoke! Rust may also damage valve & seat. Cylinders with open valves water sit in then and pitting is found on walls.

I'm kind of nerdy with the why:hmm:

Definitely possibilities. Only way to find out for sure is pull it apart. Im most interested in finding that valve and seeing what carnage it caused in the cylinder

Scope can be revealing. Did that shop rent them?

Super quick build man! And here I was complaining about how miserable my suspension job was!

you know i didn't even check. I only had two days at that shop to pull the old engine and slap the new one in so i was too pressed for time to dig into the old broken engine. Unfortunately they are only open on saturday and sunday which is why i was doing all the prep working on the new engine at a friends place or out of the back of the rental pickup. I flew home early Monday morning so it was just a big whirlwind and by the looks of my work schedule i wont be back out that way till February or March.

Awesome work! But what happened to the 40?

It's nice to see all the photos and read the story of how you acquired the truck. I can attest to how satisfying it is to see it run after all the repairs. It idled smoothly. If everything else goes okay, it could probably serve you well for many years. Knowing how you take care of the engines, replace oil on time keep an eye on all other fluids, there is no reason it won't! There is a lot to explore out in the west with this kind of truck. Are you planning to eventually install a roof rack and that big tent on it?

Well I flew back to Arizona Sunday night and out to the 100 early Monday morning. I bought both new pcv hoses for the valve covers, both new coolant hoses at the throttle body and two new hoses on the engine side of the heater tees. (Can now say all the hoses are new) Working with a headlamp I replaced all these hoses and topped off the remainder of the coolant. When I installed the engine I had only put two gallons in because I had decided on replacing those last few hoses and didn’t want to drain the red Toyota stuff again. My test drive had previously consisted of just driving it across the parking lot. I’ll put it through the proper paces this week. My wife and 6 week old girl flew out with me this trip so yesterday we started the adventure.

I logged about 330 miles yesterday and so far it’s running phenomenally.
