I'm currently battling the same problem. I chose the route of using some CLR to soak up in that area. I also use a curved pick to get up inside. I liked the doubled up wire in a drill that another member suggested.

Anyway, it helps soften things up. Chunks picked right out and I've been running CLR through my engine using a drill powered recirculating pump. Flush it out thoroughly when done.

The wire worked the best for me! I will give the CLR a try

I figured it was a combination of rust, dirt, possibly stop leak, radiator Gunk clogging everything up. Good luck! I did it on the previous 40 build and had good results.

Rest of coolant system will need to be dismantled to ensure validity most likley.

B4 engine blocks are rebuilt they are usually hot tanked or degreased. How difficult is it to remove the core plugs and to replace them? They are in a sort of in a bad spot being under the intake manifold.

You can force water in thru the hole and let it drain and repeat often, along with more picking at it. You can likely loosen more crud now that it is open. Or remove the water pump and flush.

Fin Would this be a good time to try and run it and force more out before I try to completely flush it?
couldn't hurt. mostly I'd just run the garden hose in the top of the radiator and out your drain hole, then reverse it for a while.
Did you ever replace those freeze plugs?
