Background: I'm trying to better identify an F engine code for a spare engine (disassembled parts engine, but complete) that came with my 1970 FJ40. It is not the original engine but a spare engine that the original owner had in their garage (he owned multiple FJ40s) and included when he sold it to the second owner, from whom I bought the FJ40. I'm now the owner of both the 1970 FJ40 and the spare F engine.

I've looked on the Specter Off-Road website (Frequently Asked Questions About Your Land Cruiser - Specter Off-Road - https://www.sor.com/cat/005b) and do not see the same series number, but it would appear that the spare engine is an early 1969 production date as Specter lists F 290409 as 08/1969.

Here's the block stamp F 261076:

Yes...unfortunately, the previous owner painted the entire block and valve cover blue. It also has a swapped Rochester carb and headers on it with the oil bath air cleaner. Does anyone know where I could find more information to try to date the month/year of production properly?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

First number is year number (above example would be 1962 or 1972, most likely ‘72), second two numbers are month (so above is January), and last two numbers are day of month (5th for above). That’s the date of block casting. Not sure if the bottom numbers are the block number casted that day or not.

Thanks for the information. I'll check the block casting number and repost an update.

Mystery solved...

According to the above information in the previous posts:

8 (1968) / 05 (May) / 06 (6th of May)

I'm not sure what the "163" would stand for as the 163rd day of 1968 was June 11th which means it can't be a secondary date for the day of the year. If anyone knows the answer to that one, please let me know.

Thanks for the help in figuring this one out.
