I’m used to changing the oil in my FJ62 and the crush washer supplied with filter fits the oil drain plug. On my 1978 FJ40 the plug and corresponding washer is much larger (smaller washer was supplied with filter). I took the plug and washer to auto parts store and they weren’t helpful. Does anyone know the size and where to order? I reused the washer at last oil change and for the first time had oil seeping out on garage floor. I’ve been Googling everything and just not sure what or where to order. Thanks,

I bought some felt gaskets, Dorman-brand at RockAuto. The pan on mine is warped. Last change, I put some RTV on the pan-side of the gasket. Cleaned the oil off with brake cleaner, first. It worked perfect for a seal, despite the dribble of oil as I was assembling it. I should have tipped the engine with a floor jack to fully drain the pan, and then back to normal ride-height, before I made the seal. Hopefully, the felt gasket will remain in place on the pan. If not, I have extras to use. I think they are like 1-inch, or the metric equivalent. I know SOR sells oil drain pan gaskets.

The best oil plug washer is made out of pure soft lead. Needs to be about 1/8" thick. Sheet lead or muzzle loader balls melted and poured on some paper. You can cut it with a sharp flat blade screwdriver. When it wears out, melt it and cast it again.

OK so it looks like SOR has an oil pan gasket that is 25mm inner diameter. I’ll have to call tomorrow since the website isn’t calculating shipping correctly. Hopefully that is it and I can finish next weekend. Thx!

FWIW, you should be able to find them at your local Toyota stealership (around $2.50) and btw, SOR shipping may have calculated it correctly. They are known to have high shipping prices but on the check out page, you can clip on USPS option which is usually cheaper but you won't get a calculated price.

And any of the usual vendors should carry the drain plug gasket for around $3+ dollars.

You are making this a lot harder than you need to. You can walk into any parts store and find a pre-packaged assortment of oil pan washers on the shelf for a couple of bucks that will have one that will do the job for you.

Mark...

That’s what I thought Mark but they were no help. I’ll try another place this afternoon.

You can buy a sheet of gasket paper. Place over the plug engine side. Tap around the perimeter of the bolt portion with something like a small hammer/ big socket, usually by about the 10 th time around the gasket will be cut to exactly fit. Screw it down then use a knife or scissors to trim the outside of the gasket round.

I sorta like Charlie’s ideal, a lead casting. Someplace I actually found a soft plastic washer for the oil drain plug. Or maybe I cut it out of an old milk jug….but it’s been there since the overhaul (7 years now)….no leaks.

However, what I like to find is a transmission (3 speed) drain plug gasket that didn’t leak.

I had a similar difficult time locating this 25mm gasket a couple weeks ago, ended up with three of the smaller wrong kind from the dealership then found a post with a Napa part number for a 1" ID gasket.....drove across town to get the $2 gasket and they told me they only sold them in packs of 20! 😡Local FAPS had nothing for me either!

Totally defeated retuned home found a @Pighead post where he mentions using just Toyota FIPG so went that route, haven't driven it yet but no leaks so far. Will get and install the proper item next oil change.
