1972 FJ40- I removed the engine block drain plug, everything I have read says that coolant should come out. Mine is dry. Not sure why? Any ideas on how to unblock it without damaging the engine block.

I used the wire and broke up was looks like fine dirt. Also, used a small flat head screwdriver and started seeing a black substance on the tip, but still no coolant.

what they look like...

Keep poking, try some pressurized air.

Its got a layer of rust and crud build up. Maybe a bunch of old stop leaks too. Spray some rust breaker in, let soak for a while. Use like an old nut pick to dig carefully. Spray again, let soak dig.

Keep on digging there's probably a lot of rust sediment laying in the bottom of the water jackets. Use an All or a small stiff poker.

X2 on air, put the fitting back cleaned out, stick a nozzle on it and pressure it up, hopefully your hear bubbles at radiator. If its that full you might pull the heater fitting and see if its all full too.

Awl? I was thinking about using your longest, thinnest Philips head (does not need to be JIS) and poking it in the hole and give it a whack with a mallet.

Chuck up a short section of a steel fish tape in your drill, spin that mug in there and ream that crap out.

Just imagine the crud built up on the backside of the #6 cylinder. You're just scratching the surface right now.
