I just finished mine today. I left the spacees on the sides open for gear and spare parts. The drawers are as long as the back of the cruiser. I used ball bearing tool box rails for slides. The deck and uprights are 3/4 MDF. It is fastened to the floor with 1/8 angle. I am still waiting for the carpet. Seems heavy duty, with all of my gear and the spare tire it weighs 268 lbs. Only about 55 lbs more than the box I used to have back their.
I put foam padding under all parts that contact the floor. The over center latches keep the drawers from rattleing and take the weight off the rails when closed. Just thought I would put a post and some pictures.

Ben

Nice box, you probably could save some weight with 1/2" MDF. My second go around, im looking to see where weight can be saved.

I have the AO drawers with the fridge mounted on their slide out in my 100 sitting atop 35" tires and about 3.5" rear lift. At home I use my little 2-step folding stool to load before a trip. On the trail I try to sit the arse end down at the bottom of a little slope or hole so that I can easily get into the fridge. Or worst case I just have to kneel on the DS side of the tailgate and it works too.

But I can't give up the storage drawer underneath the fridge...which is what I would have to do to get the fridge down to an ideal height for me (5'10").

Here is mine.

AO drawers with NL 95L dual fridge and I am a shorty. The 95 L has the same footprint as the 74L but is 10 cm higher so I use my tailgate all the time.I fitted quick release clips to the fridge doors which helps. For the kind of trips we do down here you need a big fridge and batteling for access is a small price to pay.If you swap the fridge and the drawer around(which a buddy of mine did) you have no access to the fridge on the fly, which IMHO is an even bigger evil.In general the AO drawers with their big bearings tend to last the best in our conditions but they are overpriced not unlike most other things down here.

Here's the newest offering form Adventure Trailers. They made their debut at the SEMA show this last week. I will be calling the shop on monday morning to discuss various options and pricing.

As of right now all I know is that they are a composite material that is lighter than steel and come in various sizes to fit a variety of vehicles. They are pictured in Scott Brady's Disco of ExpeditionPortal/Expeditions West.

Saw them...great potential!

lighter than steel, modular to setup however you want, and built by top notch folks who know what they are doing..
I am already in line!
I saw these at SEMA and had them take measurements on my FJC to make sure it will work...sure enough the modular platform will work great in a wide variety of rigs....

How much do typical drawer sets weigh? they look heavy.

I just installed some more d rings and some slide and lock and bought plastic latching hinged top storage cases in predetermined sizes and amounts. a half dozen rachet straps assorted bungees and a tarp. all that stuff cant weigh 30#'s tops.

I'm gonna wait on my drawer system until I get a fridge, and some of those panels from Wagon Gear so I can best utilize ALL the space behind my bench seat. I actually think that I can build something to my tastes better than trying to work around some prefab off the shelf stuff. Or do as some people already do. Use rubbermaids and bungee cords. It's worked for my dad for over 20 years, and I'm damn sure it'll keep on working.

Nice!!

This was designed for an FJ Cruiser, but the concept could be translated to a 60, 80 or 100 series.

Thats nice! did you build or buy? Buy, where? Build, give a little more details, I have an 80 but looking to build a removable system similar to this one. Thanks

Love the build ! Great work!

not a personal attack ZIMM, but god a hate this train of thought. i hear it all too often. i enjoy working in the garage once in a while, why does it cost me $50 an hour to have fun but your fun is free? i understand the money investment in materials, but not time unless i'm selling what i'm building. to me, i would rather play in my garage than spend even MORE time at work. i figure at this $50 an hour rate for my free time i should stop fishing cause its costing a hell of a lot more than buying fish at the store.
i understand the decision for some to spend good money on parts they cant or dont want to build, but please dont try to justify it by telling the rest of us we are wasting our time doing what we enjoy.

not me. id rather spend my weekends out and about than in a garage, and none of these have the fit, finish, or strength of the AO's. do what you do best, let others do they do best, and exchange. its why money was invented.

i could build a roll cage for my 40 too, but when i redo it, its gonna have a sweet metaltech in there.

Figure I would add in a few pictures of my rear drawers I built for my 100. In the end, I did mine myself because it allowed me to make it how i wanted it and it saved me a ton of money. I'm a BIG believer in DIY if you enjoy it! :)

Attached is my original post in the 100 forum. 100 rear storage

Wood is also much much lighter then steel. I am a big fan of wood. If built correctly wood is Very durable, strong, and It is also relitivly inexspensive. I cant comment on the quality of the Adventure Trailers system. Other then to say that the Latch/pull hardwere look like it is Southco, Witch is top notch stuff. I just thought that it was interesting that they say "lighter then steel" Steel is heavy!

Here's a completely inelegant solution. It is, however, cheap, removable, modifiable, and functional. I've had it for about 9 months and it has performed spotlessly.

Link to build thread.
