So then I flipped the 79 series bed over and took off the sides, with help from @StucknKS put it back on the frame and mocked up the side. Need to pull up a 37 inch tire and figure out how big the wheel well needs to be…. Not sure if I’m gonna go 37 or 39 inch tires. pretty sure that. @Tank5 had 39 inch tires on the first picture on this thread.

This first pictures in the build had 40x13.50 Toyo MTs. I am not sure what their true measurement is but I did eventually swap them out for 37s.

Drilled out a lot of rivets today…. If anyone’s crazy enough to take these apart here are some pictures that might help. First up is the rear corners …. They have double layer steel you need to drill out the rivets from the outside through two layers. On the inside they were welded all the way across so I found it best just to cut through and grind this out.

I cut the wheel well out as well, pulled the spring, plopped the 37 inch tire on, and stuffed it. 4.5” bump stop will be needed, however the tire fits into the wheel well!! This is a 12 inch wide super swamper, so need to track down tall skinny for future measurements.

Realize that the wheel wheel arches flare out on the 79 series so set up a laser to figure out where I need to cut them back straight.

Also once the sun dropped below the trees, I went outside and ground off the Bondo from the bedsides.... only to find lots and lots of repair sections!!! I’m considering chopping this off half inch below the top radius and putting new sheet metal on. Wondering if I should just put on stainless as well.

Really this isn’t a bad situation…. I was planning on extending the front section to be the same height as the cab, and Given the way to Tires Stuff the stock flare would not work anyway….

I was talking to @tornadoalleycruiser about making some steel flares for this and recalled pics of someone making them in sandles... found the pic finally..

Ipor was making metal flares for a while. Lance put them on his fzj40 back in the day. They may still be making them.

wanted to get some ideas on what to do on the rear flares, and the sides as well... don't really like this one with the black Jeep plastic flares....

This looks stock to me... to get the tires to flex fully, I would need to lift the flare up to the return part of the side....

This one is better than the first, but still too much out there....

this is about as high I will need the flare to be starting at for full flex.

again, looks stock, but maybe wider...

Aqualu makes some decent looking aluminum fender flares. I believe there are pictures of me mocking your project up with some in my build thread of it.

I agree with the no Jeep flares.
Yeah, Aqualu, 40 series flare or check out the Wild Horses Gorilla Early Bronco flares, they a very flexible can shape them to look 40ish.
I have the specs of HxWxT etc... if you want me to post them I can.

So this became a decision point. The 79 series top section is about 9" tall, while the 79' series is 7" tall. I really, really like the 9" tall with the dimple die line in it... matches old 45 series beds; however, the issue with the 80 series flex is that the flare would start right at the bottom of the bend... grabbed some jeep flares to mock it up...

Here is where the flare would start on the 75 series side.

Here is where the flare would sit on the 79 series side.

The other point on this decision was that the tailgate of the 79 is also 2" shorter than the 75 series, at the same points. If I use the 75' series tailgate, when open, it would sit 2" below the bed level.... so my plan was to use the 79' series tailgate... which added fuel to the fire to decide to use the 79' series sides for the top.....

Wanted @tornadoalleycruiser to know I plan to keep my reputation to cut fast and overthink later.... so time to make some sparks....

My thought was to weld the flares on, so there is no sharp edge at top..... see red line below.

I like the way you get after it.

NICE work !!

@waiting for time -- homerun there!!! Exactly what I am in thinking... What kind of streatcher do you use??

Just a standard Lancaster type.
Making the outside corners is easy that way. I would make the diagonal pieces in the corners with an English Wheel now, better curve that way, mallet and sandbag for the first shape and EW or Planishing hammer to smooth things out.

Carry on!.. I figured after the call you would be cutting steel!

This is my buddy @jfz80 . Hopefully he sees this and can chime in on his setup, and/or thoughts on flares.

Yup. That’s me.

Those are stock. Or stock ish; perhaps the dimensions got a bit mushrom’d (sic) as there’s a bit a filler on that side from an ole Greg “resto” but most the bondo is back between the wheel well and back edge of bed. Can put a tape on them if you’d like.

At one point I had some of the 1/4” armor flares from lance but sold them as that truck stays mostly on road.

Other thoughts. I recall someone bending tube and then slicing in half and adding a backside cap/flange that was then welded to the bedsides. Or I think it was welded then skimmed. May have been bolted. Not sure where to even look for that one. I think it was a repair to someone cutting the arches.
