Not the modified intake, you would need to have the stock setup during inspection....Like you said though, doesn't take long to swap those parts at all.
 
Yeah, if you were to make the inlet pipe flanged near the firewall or underneath the truck we can just swap back in the stock air cleaner box... I am liking where this design is going, good work!!!!
 
So far put about 800 miles on it. Could not be more happy. 0 issues to date. No check engine light. AFR is spot on. Engine temps have not passed 195 even when we had 100 degree temps here last week.
 
I take city streets to work and back everyday. Have not got a chance to get on the freeways lately. Soon as I do, I will give you a 0-whatever I get to before slamming on the brakes or seeing some Red-Blue strobes in the rear view.
 
Hello guys...new to LC's and the forum...decided to reply to this thread before making my introduction to the forum because I'm just way too interested in this kit...problem is I'm in the Caribbean (Puerto Rico). I'm an auto tech by trade, also a welder by trade, and marine tech, also by trade, working on marine diesel Volvo penta engines. My rig is a 91 3sfe and I think the setup should work for her but would like your advice... I can source all the parts for the build and put everything together at the shop I work with no problems... My only concern is with the water crossings and mud... I plan on taking her to the places around here and we've got quite a bit of mud trails and pits out in the country... Any thoughts will be appreciated and hope you don't mind me replicating your idea to some extent since I'm so far away... Thanks for your help!!!!!!:-)
 
Flattered that your first post is here. Welcome to your new love hate relationship. From what I have read, the 3fe is not as happy to see forced induction as the 1fz. However this is all new unchartered Turbo territory. Not sure how the ecu will react with obd1 as well. I am planning on testing one on a 3fe once I finish building kits for the FZJ's. As far as mud and water, I wouldn't worry so much if you run the intake back up front to the factory air box and snorkel. Everything else can be fully submerged with 0 issues. This has been done by many people for a long time. Let me know if you have any questions. Puerto Rico huh, good times....

Very cool to hear ... especially since it sounds like you do all city driving ... all that stop/go, accelerate/deccelerate, idling, etc in hot weather. Great thread, John!

EDIT: And looking forward to finding out how the smog check goes.

I am quite interested in how this turns out. My 80 drivertain is stock and I am nearby...
 
Here's a 0-60 pull. For reference, it has 17" 35's with stock gearing. As far as weight, I have front bumper w/winch, sliders, full roof rack, full tank of gas and some light gear in the back. At 60mph, it is actually around 65mph. In this video I am using the smaller Rotomaster Turbo and was boosting 6psi.

So approx 8-9 seconds with a rolling start running 6psi. Not a bad improvement over stock. 9 or 10psi would be interesting, maybe into the 7 second range. That would be pretty quick for a land barge like ours.
 
All the cars I own are fast. They kind of have to be since I am in the biz. So when it came to this rig, it was a no brainer. Something had to be done. I will be upping the boost now that I am a little more confident in the way the engine is handling the forced air. I will try to run 9-10psi and do another video to compare.
 
At what point does the increased duct length reach its maximum ability to shed the heat from the intake charge? I realize a well matched turbo will provide a lower intake charge temperature than a smaller unit that is overboosted, but considering the turbo you are planning for the kit- what is the peak projected pressure you anticipate being able to run with this simplified system?
 
Highest I have gone is 10psi to date. However been testing under 7psi for the last month. I can say for the setup I am running, the smaller of the 2 turbos I tested is much more responsive of course. However the larger Turbonetics 60-1 pushes like crazy after 3800 rpms. I am not worried on air intake temps since the turbo is running much cooler in the back. Also the charge piping running to the front is cooling air as it travels, plus the in line intercooler helps. I believe there is a huge difference in air temps when compared to a supercharger or conventional turbo kit for these trucks, or any other vehicle for that matter.

Or in your garage if you have a bender and welding tools. This is going to be very similar to a bumper build, but just more fun! Estimated price would be starting at $2k+

Again, still testing to see what works and what needs more attention. But I do plan on getting them in production if the demand is there. I would first like to install it on someone from the forum community so that they can test for themselves and review their own experience.

Terrific project and thread. Well worth the lurking, but truly anxious for the kits. As a very satisfied Marlin Crawler tcase gear user, the turbo would resolve the other problem in the 80. Stock gears and 35s in this config are fine at Moab/trails, but hwy/towing NEED this kit badly.

I am working on getting all the components as well as pricing figured out. I have had more than a few interested members call me as well as many PM's asking for kits. I do not like to make promises I can not fulfill, so as soon as I get things worked out, I will post what I have to offer. I am excited as well to see this setup on other member's rigs with video's of their own happily boosting.
 
I just read through this entire thread and I can tell you (I'm sure others echo this) is that this is completely awesome and necessary! haha...
I think a kit like this would be in huge demand especially how well you have thought it out and tested it. Is there any opinion on how this would affect MPG either positively or negatively?

So far mileage has been unchanged. Still getting about 12 city with a lot of stop and go. Stock Injectors, stock ECU, so fuel trim is about the same. I have to say that the sound is so awesome that you will definitely suffer at the pump because that happy right foot is going to keep smashing that little gas pedal.
