Hey thanks for the kind words twoturtles! I really appreciate it! It has been a great truck and some great projects for sure. Even if a little stressful taking a running driving truck apart for whatever reason!

I have been super busy this past week. My hopes was to have it on the road by now but a few set backs have not allowed me to do so. Not big deals but its always time consuming!

A few items have been put on hold in order for me to just get the truck driving. At the same time I know that if I don't do certain items now it will never get done in the future!

First item of buisiness is the intercooler and radiator mounting. The intercooler is a massive unit off of a 8.1 liter Hino diesel. As you can see in the pics it's roughly the same size of the radiator! Good thing I put in a 4cyl diesel or I would run out of room real quick:

My intial design put the fans too close to the engine so I ended up having to sandwich the intercooler. Not ideal for removing easily but the intercooler, radiator and fans now are all one unit.

A delay in the build came when trying to source an oil feed line for the turbo. After many phone calls and a solid day wasted driving around trying to find fittings I found Oil Filter Service in Portland with the help of Mike. Though they didn't have the fittings on the shelf they did have it made overnight for about $60.

The Brown Santa came by and dropped off some parts. Power steering oil cooler and flex pipe for the exhaust.

Steering cooler plumbed and mounted:

Flex pipe welded on 3" straight pipe exhaust:

Part of the frustration with the build came in the form of the down tube for the turbo. Apparently Chevy runs thier "own system" and aftermarket parts are $100 plus. I was able to get the stock down tube and clamp from a wrecked truck for $20 but it took weeks to track down. It was almost an exact fit into the engine bay an only took about 30 mins to cut and weld in a wedge to get it to line up:

I bought a stick of 3" straight pipe from Napa for $35 but it was just a bit short. A quick trip across the street to my neighbors house yeilded a stock exhaust from a Dodge diesel for a 6 pack. It had all the bits I needed to finish the exhaust. 3" next to stock:

I made a few changes to how I had routed the cooling lines to better facilitate flow to the rear heat and to add in my heat exchanger for on board shower/ hot water:

I will be working on the intercooler, intake and other misc stuff this week. I also picked up the painless dual fan control for the contour fans. It was a bit spendy but looks to have some nice features:

Anyways we are on the home stretch and it shouldn't bee too much longer!

Thanks for looking.

I know exactly how you feel triying to locate a specific part in the town .. driving one place to another .. you are pretty close .. keep it going ..

Clint,

I was looking around today trying check somethings on my clutch rattle...I found it - Bad Pilot Bearing!, and was on the Advance Adapters web site and found some info that sounds like your clutch problem.

If you go the their swap info pages and check Chevota clutches, they discuss having to use a special low profile clutch package to work with the Toyota slave throw travel. If you don't use a low profile, it won't re;larse properly!

Check it out.

Hi Doug,

Thanks for getting back to me. It turns out I had a defective pressure plate. I had that posted up in the other thread. I am glad you got your oilot bearing figured out! You are the man for being able to pull your engine in three hours. It would take me a week!

Again thanks for the kind words guys!

Sorry for the lack of updates. It has been a trying and very frustrating week to say the least. The last few bits of the truck to finish up was the intake and exhaust. But after running into the issue with the clutch I ran out of time and patience. I couldn't just walk away from it as I leave in two days for a nice 800 mile plus trip with the Cascade Cruisers!

So its on the road!!! I have been enjoying it for about 4 days now. So far I had two small leaks. One was the petcock drain on the radiator and it sealed itself with some heat cycling. The second was the oil feed for the injection pump. That turned out to be a loose bolt.

I am pretty happy with it so far. The power is easily what the 2F had and with over 100 miles on it I have bearly used 1/4 tank of fuel. Right now its hard to keep my foot out of it as the sound is amazing! I have a few vibration issues to work out where the exhaust is hitting the body but other than that its really not too bad! The sound deadning has made the biggest difference for sure. I have yet to do the doors with the sound deading but will get to them when the new weatherstripping goes in next month.

So blah blah blah here is a few pics:

I am going to be replacing the cheap intake clamps with HD t bolts when my hardware store gets them back in stock. For now I used them on the hard to reach spots.

I also got some Sears Diehard P4 platninum batteries for fathers day!

3" straight pipe no muffler exhaust:

Dash switches again for now added fan control, glow relay, dual batteries/ inverter:

Fan switch controls 100% on, computer controled, and off functions. The last one is needed for those water crossings in case I need to use this:

Worked with creepersleeper last night wiring in the EGT and part of the boost gauge and a few misc items. I will take a few more pics of those today and post up later.

Thanks for looking!

Clint,

That is great news!

Man, I've been hoping for this post for a while now.
Glad you got the clutch figured out. What a pain!

Have fun on the trip and enjoy the new mileage boost!

Enjoy!

Don

Clint,

Looks great! I was told to drive mine for a while, then take care of the little "Things" all at once, and it works out well to do so.

Congratulations, Nice work.

YEAH BUDDY! I'm jealous! :p

I hope that you enjoy every minute of your trip and that you take some video's along the way for those of us who are still dreaming the dreams instead of driving 'em!;)

Looks AWESOME!

I rode shotgun on the McGrew Trail ride and grabbed some video of Clint's rig in action. Here's a link.

It did very well! He let me drive out to the road from camp and it was enjoyable to drive. Needs just some minor tuning for that turbo to light a little better (expected since the stock turbo was way smaller and nothing's really been done to the IP) but overall it's a fantastic rig and is definitely a long term keeper.

Nice! Looks like suspension works well. Are ya just loving the motor? Mileage? on/off road. It looks like you can idle up anything.

Clint,

Looks like she's runnin' great!

I thought I was going to have to re-gear mine, but the sweet diesel torque lets it idle right through just about anything I have come up against. Your's does the same with 37's even! Nice!

Good to see it back on the trail with a new heart and congrats on all you're hard work rewarded.

Enjoy,
Don

Those wheels look awesome. That engine hardly ever get above idle. That convinced me, I need a diesel.

Great work Clint !!!

That rig looks bad ass !!!!

Gotta love the sound of that diesel eh !!!!

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the advice. Yeah it helps to get a game plan and go after 2 or 3 things at a time. Thanks for the compliment.

boost it up Clint .!

working on it!

Awesome build! Looking forward to seeing a vid of it on the trail.

got a few bits that Mike took as you can see below. Thank you!

I know what you mean by living vicariously through others. It has been a 5 year process to get this far! Thank you.

Thanks for posting up the vid Mike. I really had a good time on the McGrew trip and appreciate your help with the build. Without you I would still be collecting parts!

wow... wow...

I love it.

Thanks Zach I really appreciate it. Can't wait to show it off some and get busy on the swagger wagon!

Hey Jeff, The SOA works really well. I need to redo a few things mainly the bump stops. I am happy to report that I am averaging 20 mpg, about 25 + highway and 17 off road. The low end torque is amazing and yes I can idle up just about everything.

Hi Don,

I have been very pleased with the swap. The gearing is just right for me and the mountains around here. I would hope for a bit more rpm's on the upper end but its a sacrifice for the off road drivability. The 37's are a non issue with the current set up. Spools up pretty quickly and holds 60 + on mountain passes.

Those wheels look awesome. That engine hardly ever get above idle. That convinced me, I need a diesel.

yes you need a diesel. we all do :D

Great work Clint !!!

That rig looks bad ass !!!!

Gotta love the sound of that diesel eh !!!!

I do love the sound of the diesel. I just can't get over how freakin cool this thing sounds and feels going down the road. I just grin ear to ear everytime I fire it up!

So I got chewed on a bit on the McGrew trail run by a few guys who were hanging on my everyword in regards to being done with the swap.

Obviously its done and I have been enjoying it immensly. The MPG is more than double than the 2F. After calculating it I am averaging 20.66 mpg after 2700 miles on the road. I figured it out and it will take 37 fill ups to break even on the swap.

My total cost on it is right around $3200. Not too shabby considering an anemic 3b is $3500 and a 2H right around the same.

On the boost I am still convinced I have the right turbo for this set up. I am boosting about 0 under no load and highway speeds, 4 under slight load, 12 on highway passes in 5th, and 16 under hard pull in 3rd. I have tweaked the fuel screw 1/4 turn and there is plenty of room to play. My EGT's are steady at 1200 under heavy highway passes and 800 under normal driving.

Not much else to report. Feel free to ask any questions!

Clint
