The 56 has ambulance doors instead of the rear tailgate. Not sure of what else.

In February, I stopped by 4x4 Labs to pick up a bumper for a friend. Luke had a 56 he bought recently, pics are below. This was before I had my pig, so I couldn't give it a good comparison.

Amby doors..... mmmmmm. So much better than a crappy electric window in the winter...

got to love those mirrors and the lack of a opening window in the rear.
looks like its a 76 or newer

According to Alexander Wohlfarth, author of "The Land Cruiser Legend", the FJ55 became the 56 in Japan after '74, with the introduction of the 2F engine. This model designation change was limited to Japan only, while elsewhere, it continued to be called the 55.
He also says that in '79 the "J5" was offered with the 2B engine-only in Japan.

In Aus they are all FJ55. I didn't know there was an FJ56. Anyone got a pic of the plate?

In Aus the FJ55 came with 'tailgate' drop down rear door. Barn doors were an option that could be specified when ordering.

I've got one of each :)

This thread has always bugged me.

“fj56 is a fire truck”
Maaaybe, depending on year and market.

“The 56 has ambulance doors instead of the rear tailgate. Not sure of what else.“

Nope, wrong. I own two barn doored FJ55s.

I think I finally found an answer, from Toyota, on the difference between the FJ55V and FJ56V

To comply with the emission standards, the FJ55 for the domestic market was replaced with the FJ56V in January 1975, adopting an inline 6-cylinder 4,230 cc 135 hp engine (2F) and a 4-speed manual transmission.

Here, “domestic market” is Japan. So if you have a 1975 or later Iron Pig originally sold in Japan, you have a FJ56V.

The 55 with a F engine is a FJ55
The 55 with a 2F is a FJ55
The 60 with a 2F is a FJ60
The 62 with a 3F is a FJ62
The 80 with the 3F is a FJ80
The 80 with the 1FZ-FE is a FZJ80
The 100 with the 2UZ-FE is a UZJ100
The 100 with the 1FZ-FE is a FZJ100
so a 55 with a 1UZ-FE is a UZJ55

....and FWIW (which is not much in a US context), an 80 with a 1FZ-F is still an FZJ80.

If I put a Sniper EFI on a 1fz with the carb intake manifold and a no-egr head is that still a 1fz-f or is it a 1fz-fe?
🤔

I would say a 1FZ-F. I recently learned on my 1994 FZJ75 with a 1FZ-F engine that the block is slightly different than the 1FZ-FE block. Therefore, since you still have the F block and not the FE block I think it would still be a -F.
