8.5 miler this morning. Despite the persistent rain, the trails have pretty much dried out. Time to rail the corners! Pushed the ride pretty hard, except for the wet hike a bike spots. Bonus points for the Pileated Woodpecker flying by.

All in, a solid ride. A little tired at the finish, but that’s a good thing.

Did close to 14 miles this morning. My legs were a bit tired at the start as I was Spinning on Tuesday, and riding on Wednesday. Felt like I could have used another rest day, but oh well. The good news was that my pace was the same as the last time I rode this route over a month ago. So same watts on tired legs.

I’ll take that!

Bits are slowly arriving; front wheel has arrived, rear is due tomorrow... and then I've just got to order the other bits and pieces I need. Off to Brisbane next weekend, so I can get some more bits and pieces when I'm there as there is one of the big shops there, and that saves me waiting on postage!

Still a couple of bits to decide which I need advice on:
  • 30 vs 32 vs 34 tooth for a Shimano 1x12 drivetrain (10-51 cassette)
  • New style shifter mounts or the old school shifter and brakes mounted seperately - ie this option with the I-Spec EV or the traditional? Both work with the planned brake lever

Operation build bike continues... as planned, went to shop in Brisbane and now have tyres, tubes and shift cable... still a good way off a complete bike, but I'm happy with the direction it's taking.

Basic plan is just build it with a utilitarian groupset (SLX) that will just work. From the previous questions, I've reached the conclusion of:
  • I-spec EV shifter and brake lever, seems to be a really nice combination
  • 32 tooth front chain ring will give me a near 1:1 ratio towards the lower end, which I'm happy with, and the lowest (32:51) is around the same as my mountain bike lowest of 22:36
Tyranny of choice challenge now is that I put the handlebars that are really meant for this bike on my hardtail, and that needed new brake hoses and shift cables, so kinda added up a bit as a project (sunk cost, that had I known how much it was going to cost, wouldn't have done it!) but I found I like the new bars on that bike as well. So... do I get another set the same (Ritchey Kyotes) or go up a bit more rise, continuing to make this new bike a bit more upright by going for the Ritchey Buzzard?

Other parts will be order this week, no chance of having them for the long weekend, so it's just continue to order a bit here and there.

Following up on previous discussion of Microshift AdventX groupset: 590 miles and the clutch "failed" during a climb on a steep, root- and rock-covered dirt trail. This caused chain drop and I fell, no injuries just a trivial scrape.

After putting the chain back on, when engaged the clutch didn't... clutch, derailleur moved freely. Switched off then back on, same. When I got home, removed the cover and adjusted. Per Microshift, adjust in 1/4 turn increments. Well, I couldn't even tighten 1/4 turn until I hit the limit. I'll cart the bike up to the shop this week to see what they have to say.
