Now that I'm 57 and looking at other mid 50s men riding their MTB wearing their cool Hawaiian shirts, I'm thinking I want to do that too :). I need to look into wearing a hip hydration pack and move away from my backpack hydration pack as I do hate a soaking back after a ride. Richard Simmons ruined the fanny pack for me so I'm calling this a hip/lumbar hydration pack. I see there are kinds that offer a shoulder strap to keep the weight at the same place while riding. My dog and I'll drink from this pack so it needs to be 1.5L cap I'm thinking. My current one is an Osprey 2L pack.

Thanks for your recommendations.

😆

I hydrate with bottles only and wear a small fanny pack for snacks and tools. But I see some people using a USME product that might work for you.

Also if I am planning to do any kind of technical, chunky riding I dress like a roadie. It only takes catching the tip of your seat in your shorts or pearl snap shirt one time to realize when it makes sense to wear Lycra on a mountain bike.

I thought about going with the water bottle concept and may try it as a cheap experiment. I'll look up ASME product online, thx for that.

I have an oversized Oveja Negra hip pack that takes a 3L hydration bladder and then I just run the hose out to a bladder hose clip.

I've been using a Dakine hippack and it's been good. Comes with a 2 L bladder. Which me and my dog also use. For longer rides, I'll put a bottle with electrolytes on the bike. I'd like to try out the new one from rogue panda though. Their waist belts look like they would be comfy.

And to the other guy who posted about catching their shorts-I've been using shorts from Club ride and Tasco. They never catch on my seat. And I ride some very techy/chunky trails. But, in reality whatever works for you, is the best.

thanks, let me look into this brand. Did you end up getting the water bladder from the same vendor? I see this one and curious if it'll fit inside the pack.

whose bladder are you using?

I can use any bladder I want. I believe I am running a Dakine top tube insert style like you posted above. I can take a picture after work and text it to you, Ash.
cool, cool.

any hip pack will work, type is personal preference. 1/2 liter Nalgene bottles fit in a cycle jersey pocket. One bottle on the bike, one bottle/bladder in pack and one or two in jersey is an option if needed for longer rides. carry filter is there is water along your route.

This is the one I brought-although I brought it on sale so it was this spendy.

It came with the bladder, which is the same as the one you posted.

I got something from Amazon and looking forward to trying out this concept next week. Oh yeah, also bought a cool riding shirt

For a backpack I’ve been using camelbacks for >30 years. I got this one last summer and it is the best yet, also back breaths very well

For a hip pack I use this one on shorter rides. I’ve used a 1.5L camelback reservoir with it. Most of the time just use the quick stow bottles with it.

I haven't had great luck running hip packs with bladders. If I need that much water I tend to pull out the full pack. The heavier hip packs with the bladders tend to be real annoying to position or have to be incredibly tight to feel secure.

I have a PNW with a bottle holder and a High Above with a bottle holder and those are pretty good for adding an extra 20oz or so

For me, Mtn.Bike under 2 hr ride 1 bottle on the bike. Over 2 I will take a camelbak just in case. Nothing on my hips, gels and tools in my riding jersey. Road bike ride I run 2 bottles on the frame, and all other stuff in my jersey pocket.
