Jon,
I run a summit racing pump on my 3FE. It's mounted at the rear of my truck on the frame rail. When I first start the truck up, I can hear it running, and even hear the fuel flowing back into the tank under the PS seat. I kind of like being able to hear it to just make sure things are working. I have a hidden off switch, and sometimes I jump in the truck and forget to flip it, so the fuel pump sound it a nice reminder. Details are in my 3FE40 thread, but it looks just like the pumps you show in your pictues.

Also - I've had this pump in the truck for almost a year, and have been daily driving the FJ40, and I've had no problems.

Once Iam driving, and have the radio playing, I don't even notice it. Just my $.02.

Mark,

I think we might have the same pump from Summit. The pump was very loud bolted directly to the frame. You could hear it from the drivers seat with the engine running. Now, I can hear the pump when I walk back to the rear wheels, but not with the engine running from the seat. It was much better on the freeway yesterday.

The first pump I installed gave me a few fits. I bought a backup and installed it recently. The second pump sounds better than the first pump and so far has not been a problem. I carry the first pump as a spare. I'm still going to install a Cressida/Celia pump. They are very quiet, but cost a fortune new.

As I recall our pumps are wired differently. Yours comes directly off the ignition switch, while mine is triggered by the ECU.

i have a chevy van pump on my 40. i need 35-40psi. i forget what you needed Jon. i have the part # around here somewhere. it is fairly quiet and runs about$120 at NAPA. i have had to put in the surge tank like others mentioned here. i have had 1 go out over time, but with plenty of warning.

I H8 electrical gremlins.

Since coming back from Moab I've had a problem with the tail lights. The fuse keeps popping. Since I built the harness I had an idea how to go about isolating the "short." I started by isolating lights. Fender lights, apron lights, bib lights, tail lights. Fuse kept popping. That only left the dash ... and the relay. Ummmmm.

Since the fuse was not popping quickly I suspected it wasn't a ground short. The lights would stay on for awhile, then pop the fuse. I suspected the relay. As I recall, I had the same problem with the head light relay awhile back. They were both from the same "batch," in other words the same purchase.

I swapped out the relay. The lights have been on for half an hour now. I hope that was it.

Jon,

Where did you procure xfer-case parking brake?

A company that is no longer in business. I believe SOR.com still carries it. I tried to source it through CDan, but didn't have any luck getting the non-USA parts.

You can get a T-case parking brake from SOR or MAF for the split case. We've got one from SOR ready to go in as soon as I get off my butt and rip into the T-case.

Pricey though. If I didn't already have my rebuilt FF rear axle for the 45, I'd probably put a 60 series axle on it just to avoid the parking brake issue.

I believe the 60 axle is wider?

I believe the 60 axle is wider?

It is, but I figure I could deal with that. Either that or look for a 70 series axle (not as wide as the 60, and has the integrated parking brake/disk brake setup).

Josh Boltrek (HJ47) has put a 60 series axle under the rear only of his 40, and says it drives fine.

Moot point, since I have the rebuilt FF rear axle already, and the H55f, so the only way to mate those two together will be with a split case and a parking brake of some sort.

It will probably come down to how easy it is to install the parking brake on Dad's split case (sometime in the next month or so), and how well it works if I end up going that route or looking for one of the disc options.

But to correct the thread drift...

Da'40 is awesome. Very awesome.

Since this has come back up, I have made a minor improvement to the truck's safety.

The mirrors on Da'40 came from CCOT. They were flat specimens, and while the visibility on the drivers side was OK, the passenger side was dangerous. Even with a medium sized convex mirror stuck on I still had a hard time telling what was on the right side. This was especially true at night.

So, like any good boy or girl I went online. I'll be dang if the same company that provided the flat mirrors also had a matching convex mirror. I ordered one and installed it on the passenger side. The difference is beyond significant. I can see clear as day what is next to me. I like it so much I just ordered a second for the drivers side.

CCOT should at least be providing the convex mirror in their kit for the passenger side. There really isn't any excuse. It's available, and the same cost, IIRC, as the flat mirror.

Convex Mirror

...I ordered one and installed it on the passenger side...

I'd be interested in one or two also... can you provide a link or details?

Thanks,
Guy

but now what for the Hi-Lift?

Today I played with a possible solution to mounting the jack. Not on the rear bumper, but to the roll cage. I used muffler clamps, and I will probably make one small change.

That's really slick Jon.

Mmmm. Up high. Raises the CG.

Enough to make a difference?

The straw that broke the camel's back...

Ya just never know until afterwards.

I'm sure that jack weighs less than a hard top. Also, because of the design, I can locate it it anyplace along the roll cage.

Dan,

You can use the backing plates from a 60 series to get the hand brake in the rear axle, but you will have to fabricate a cable; the 60 series cable will be 2.5" too long. You will also need to cut the two mounts off the 60 series axle which hold the cable to the axle and weld them to your 40 series axle.

I did this on my old 40 series axle when I broke the original LX axle housing. I could not find another, so I took an axle from a troopy without the hand brake and moved my backing plates and mounts to it. I still have that axle, but it is sitting on my floor here in the land of Big Brother....I'll bring it up with me when we move home, as we will be getting a 40' container for the Cruiser and household stuff (and a 45 series pickup tub, etc).

As for my 60 series axle - love it!!

Josh
