Custom brass rear window gears for a limited time!

How many people are still trying to get these gears? I know a gear genius with 100 year old equipment and is one of only a handful of gear guys left in the southeast. He makes gears for obsolete industrial equipment, and he is old school....no cell phone, no internet, no blueprints. I bet he could make up a batch of these. What is the preferred metal? Anyone have a sample of the gears needed? Are there different gears used over the years? What would folks be willing to pay for these? Let me know and I will see what I can do.

we do have at least one good plastic gear laying around. the desired stuff is brass because it won't crack, but will wear easier than the rest of the regulator

Brass is my preference because it is the weaker metal. I'd rather replace the main gear as opposed to the worm gear.

I think an acceptable price would be $75.00.

I believe that there is an interest/need for the gears. Times are tough though and if the price moves much beyond $75.00 and I'm thinking that interest will wane ....

Does anyone have a brass one to loan me? A plastic one may work, so I will ask.

I will call the guy today and see what he can do. Since he is using old manual gear Hobbs, etc, I would not expect much of a break on volume.

I have a plastic one that is starting to crack. Nobody wanted it, so you can have it for your model. That way Ige doesn't have to risk a good one.

Looks like SOR is the only place to go now. Sure, they're dang expensive but they've got what you want. I have no problem supporting Mr. Specter from time to time. He's already a legendary member of the Land Cruiser community.

to make the gear is a two step process. The machine shop will make the blank and then the gear guru will cut the gears. Then, we will place the newly cut gear in the window mechanism for a test fit and run. it shant be too tight or too loose. Once the gear is sized perfectly, then the production run will begin. The alloy used is a bronze aluminum alloy that is a little stronger than straight brass. Once scrapdaddy sends me the plastic gear, the games will begin.

i need one. I did some research on someone making one for me and it was around $65-70 if I recall.

The "original copies" that cruiser_guy had machined in Costa Rica were $60 IIRC

I dropped off the gear today and talked with the guy at length. The only real challenge on it it is making the oval center part that fits around the shaft. I am out of town next week, and he said he would have me a price for the initial ten when I get back.

To show how brittle these things are, I was handing the gear that scrapdaddy sent me to the gear guru and somehow we dropped it. The small crack around the metal bushing in the center of the gear turned into a crack that goes to the outer edge, making it utterly worthless for use again. It is still intact, but it would burst if ever used again. It fell 3 feet and did this.

if you add to the picture, dried out grease and caked on dirt, with the brittle gear, it's no wonder they all break. When you're done with the gear, put it in the round file.

Thanks for taking on such an important task, alot of guys will be wanting a shiny new brass gear.

there were at least two different gears, but i believe that is all.
