You're a buzz kill. Stop s***ting in Tor's thread.

Start your own thread about ROI on engine swaps.

No one cares that you don't want to spend the money on a R2.8 swap.
What's wrong with weighing which diesel engine is a good candidate for a swap I'm talking about the pros and cons? My post got a couple likes so I'll maybe you didn't care for it others did

These last bunch of posts are like trying to calculate the ROI for a penis enlargement.

So you don't sit down and figure out how much power, torque, and fuel gains u are getting b4 doing a motor swap and see what your getting for your dollars? Do u just swap into your cruiser whatever is supposedly the latest and greatest because of hype? Have u done a motor swap? Even a diy motor swap is a big expense as well as a big investment of time. Ive known guys to have a shop do a motor swap before thinking it through and take it back to have another swap of a different motor done when they realized they didn't like the first motor they picked out.

What's the total cost per additional hp/tq of this swap over say for example a 3fe? The 3fe has 155hp and 220lbft of torque. 2.8r has 167hp and 267lbft of torque. So that's a increase of 12hp and 47lbft of torque. If the 2.8r is 9000 dollars, that's 191.48$ for each additional lbft of torque, and 750.00 per additional horsepower. I'm guessing double the numbers for labor and other misc parts? Just trying to weigh the numbers.

If you have the stock 2F or 3FE, with high miles, maybe on it's last legs, then you have to consider a new powerplant soon. Then the math changes significantly.

@White Stripe

The point of my post was that choices do not always reduce to a calculable number - There are always going to be subjective intrinsic factors that go into making the decision (any decision - it's called confirmation bias) on what to buy and where to buy it that usually leads to irrational choices, like buying an uncomfortable, hot, noisy, leaky, rusty, 40-year-old vehicle with zero safety devices for $20K because it looks cool. The choice is made because of what the individual gets out of it. Period.

Don't take people's posts so personally: no one is questioning your economic reasoning. Truth is, engine swaps period almost never make economic sense. People generally do it for the reasons TOR mentions above. Same thing goes for engine choice: it's going to be made based on what the individual perceives he/she will get out of it.

I like stock, :meh: but would only ever swap a diesel into a Land Cruiser because I think a diesel L.C. is ****ing cool AND useful :D

But it would have to be the right diesel....

Sure is a lot of attitude on here over a damn motor swap. The man simply inquired about the economic feasibility of the swap, which I think is a totally valid question for 90% of the guys on here.

I want one, but might wait and see if a 3.8 is in the offing.

Let's return the thread to @torfab 's most excellent and tidy motor swap.

great thread, thanks for sharing info on the swap and various details...etc. I do swaps or mods for the fun of it. Yes I have to look at some things from a price point (can I afford it)....most of us have to do that I would guess at some level, nothing wrong with that. But does it make economic sense to own a hot-rod or sports car, or 4wd trail rig...the answer is "NO" about 99% of the time. Back to "FUN".

If I can nearly double the fuel mileage and improve power/torque at the same time without sacrificing reliability then He'll Yeah!
Any actual numbers for mpg for the r2.8 in a FJ60?

With h55 and 4.11s, it would have to rev a lot. But being a 2.8 one would think it should? Still I'm sure we would all like to see it in action.

If these are the same specs, it should get up n go alright.

Plugged in the h55f, 33 tires, 4.1 axle and a 3600 rpm redline into grimmjeeper. This engine should absolutely be capable of 100mph, maybe more if they are allowed to rev any more.

I know the 5.OH Mitsubishi diesel i have can hit 100, but i get kinda nervous hitting 80 LOL. Torque is fun

Torfab, how much does your rig weigh with all those things you have attached?
Thanks
I have been torn w waiting to see if they release a 3.8.
Any bets on that?

Greed comes with power, it's just natural. But with that piloting from the Crow's nest sway on the corners feeling and the steering wheel shifts from bumps in the road because of the cross-link steering and the semi hauling rocks down a hill feel of the breaks, seems the R2.8 is a very reasonable upgrade. I'm getting 12.5 mpg ave on the highway and less than 10 in town. The worst mpg's are on the freeway pushing 3k on the tach. That's with 33's, 4-speed and 3.7's. 1st is too high in low range and needs a gear halfway between 2nd and third for the back road grades. I'm not so much complaining as I'm optimistic that these trucks have potential.

Does that feel like it's got more left in it@ 3k? I would think a 5 speed would do you good.
