Cullowhee........the plan & Followup comments and stories

The Cullowhee Fall color tour is a few short weeks away this means its time to start laying out the plans for the trip!!! The general game plan for now is to have the usual two seperate meeting times to try to accomidate all those coming. Also for those of you that have made this trip before we will be taking a new route to cover some new ground and keep things interesting while still visiting and camping on the coveted "Balds". This looks to be the best Cullowhee trip yet since we should be catching the mountains at the peak of the leaf season!

What to Expect:
We will be riding roughly 30 miles on off-road trials that are located fairly deep in remote parts of Nantahala National Forest. Once on the trails we will be on them for the duration of the trip, and at some points we will be hours away from civilizaton, so with that said bring what ever you need to get through several days in the wilderness there will be no amenities anywhere close by. The trails we will be riding for the most part are easy to moderate at best and should be easy traversed by even stock Land Cruisers, that said I make no gaurantees to the current status of the trails as they are ever changing, but be assured will have many capable recovery rigs to get you through any sticky situtation :D

Meeting Place and Times:
We will be Meeting at the BP gas station located roughly 3 miles south of Cullowhee NC on highway 107..... the gas station is appropriately named "Moon Shine MiniMart" and can't be missed, also there is a local park located directly adjacent to the BP that can used as a meeting place. We will have two groups meeting up at this location one will be meeting there at 10am Friday morning and the other will be meeting around 4pm on Friday afternoon (this time is subject to change). Please let me know if neither of these times will work for you.

Food:
Everyone is responsible for their own food throughout the trip, I will try to bring some of my world famous "rotel dip" to help keep us warm at night :D

Gas:
It would be a good idea if everyone brought their own spare 5 gal gas tank for the trip......... this ride will be longer than the past ones and trust me it is a long walk to the gas station from the trails, ask me how I know :D

Well I think that covers the basics, please follow up with any questions you may have, and I hope we have a smooth and successful expedition

JP

What will the weather be like?:flipoff2:

most likely daytime highs in the 80's lows in the 60's........... I think all you will need will be shorts and a t-shirt

Don't forget the sunscreen and bug spray. Looks to be tropical-esque... :grinpimp:

Well said JP. I look forward to seeing this "different route". I will bring a chainsaw in case there are some fallen trees. I may even head out of high point Thursday evening. . . . maybe :)

The video you posted in the other thread that has the rovers in it (that were struggling i may add) looked as if they were running the trail in the reverse order of what i took you on. I think that would be really fun....especially that steep climb part.

Great, I was gonna ask if anyone was bringing a chainsaw.

As far as gas, do we really need a 5 gallon can if we fill up at the BP station right before we hit the trails? I guess it's a good safety net though.

I mean no it is not essential......... but yes it is a good saftey net; especially if we have some 40's showing up for the trip, they have half the capacity we do :D

I personally have never come out with less than 1/4 of a tank....... but you never know, I will have mine with me

I will bring a chainsaw if someone else brings spare gas for me :)

FYI for all...

We are headed to Sky Valley on Thursday night so we can get a jump in the AM. If anyone wants a place to crash, post up and we'll have a warm fire, a soft bed, a full kitchen, and a hot shower before we hit the trails. It's about 40 miles to our meeting place in the AM.

:)

I will be in the PM Friday group...unless I can make some arrangements...not probable.

Cool Heather, are all you GA cruiser guys coming up early Fri.???

Besides Dan and Steen, I don't know who else is coming. I think Steen and I will be in the early group, but he'll have to confirm.

I know John (infojunky) is coming too....... but he might be in the late group

yep, I will more than likely be in the late group....I'll keep my eyes out for you walking around :)

I'm in the early group... not sure yet if I'll try to get up there Thur night or leave early Fri AM. Depends on how many home credits I build up... or use... between now and then :ban: I'll try to be good!

I'm really a toss up at this point. Late, early or not at all. :crybaby:

If the first night's camp is still the same JP, it shouldn't take much to get people directed in. It's only what, less than 5 minutes from the gravel road?

Is the 1st night camp sight where we camped the second night last time? apple orchard?
