just got home and looking at my piece I think there is a good chance the failures are starting from a sharp machined edge... See pic... From the end mill that made the angled easy start for the cam lock...

I am a maintenance welder fabricator for a profession... Cracks in metal (& repairing them) are something I see a lot of. I'll be using a tiny (fine) round file and some Emory cloth to radius and smooth the transitions... No sharp edges is key. Vibration + sharp abrupt edges & corners will almost always end up cracking...

Just my opinion...

I'm sure the manufacturer has a few ideas too...

Thanks for sharing, It really helps diagnose and hopefully find solutions

:)

Maybe since the AC and alternator bracket is bolted to the housing has something to do with it. Unnecessary pull on it maybe?

So the thermostat housing has me really bummed. I don't have the original stock housing but do you think something else would work? When I get back in town I may pull it off and see what a machine shop thinks. I will at least do what jvoight suggested. At this point I would feel more comfortable having something that will bolt to the engine rather than the present way. I like the design but two failures isn't promising for long term.

I've been following this thread as well as many others for the purpose of doing my own cummins swap in the next year or so. I've done tons of reading and research but the one thing I'm not remembering is what is this a solution for exactly? I'm assuming the original dodge configuration doesn't fit or package well into the 80 but what exactly are the problems? Would it be the same issue on the 4BT as it would for the 6BT?

Yea kinda bummed me out too considering I have not had this running very long. I got a hold of Dustin today and he is going to ship me a new one and a label to send him this on back for inspection. he asked if I dropped it before in installed it o_O Really?! He gave me the "we designed it in solid works and it should be way strong enough", but who knows.

the purpose for this kit is it keeps the stock Toyota auto tranny vs going to a manual trans. thats the biggest part of it. on top of that he has your torq converter cutom worked to handle the torq and it comes with the trans controller. It really makes it a bolt in option instead of custom one off where you have to come up with everything on your own. if not for this kit I probably would have never done it.

BUT I would only recommend it if you are able to pick up the kit in person or have a MUD friend that can do it for you because his customer service is pretty bad.

Funny be asked me the same question. Did he say you were the first failure he heard of as well?

I understand the purpose of the kit as a whole....my question pertains to the thermostat housing in the kit....the part that's been damaged. I apologize for not being more specific initially.

Yea it just fits in there between the block and ac bracket. The ac bracket has one bolt that goes into the t stat housing. It works as the upper bracket support. See pic attached

Yeah I've seen quite a few photos of this piece but wasn't sure what problem exactly it was solving.

Well imagine that. I got a hold of Dustin Monday morning and he said he would ship it out that day, and he would have it to me by Wednesday...... its Thursday and no part and he is not answering the phone..... :bang:

When I talked to him I told him I had to go out of town on Friday and I needed my rig running for that. He said he would send it in a flat rate envelope because if he sent it UPS 2 day it would cost to much.

Think its fair for me to send him an invoice for the rental car?

I was actually at his shop today to pick up the remaining parts that got forgot in my kit and were supposed to get mailed a couple weeks ago...

I asked about you getting your part and he said it has been sent... For what that is worth... He also said there have been over 100 of those parts made and sold... Not just a dozen or so... Puts the failure % a lot better. I still feel like the failures are connected to the machining error I mentioned.

Hope u get ur part bud!!

Wow I figured most people would have posted their swaps on MUD.

Could he just be saying that to make the failure rate sound lower?

I really am going to... so far I have just pulled my motor & tranny and been working on prep... And collecting parts. Mine is a 92 so there are a few extra steps that need to be taken to basically make it like a 93-97... Just to make the kit work as intended. I've been taking pics since I started so I'll get caught up on a build thread... Really I just can't come up with a good title for my build!
