Clean solutions for securing water bottles? (1 Viewer)

I would gladly sacrifice the ability to close the lid in exchange for a decent cup holder that will fit a pair of kleen kanteen 21 or 24 oz water bottles (2.87” dia.).
The current hole size for each prototype insert is 3.0" so your Kleen bottles would fit fine. 3" is rather common/universal size. It doesn't accept everything but holds most containers somewhat secure.

First... I think it’s awesome that you are even doing any of this. Thank you!

About the lid question—
-Look at the huge space it frees up for creative solutions. (Ignore 11 years of accumulated crud...).

Literally no screws or clips to fiddle with. Just pull hard and out the whole thing comes....lid and all. Then it’s this huge rectangular hole.

I’m thinking there’s a good chance this void/space is the same underneath even on newer model years. Maybe others can confirm.

I had no idea it was that easy or I’d have left it with him to do the design. I reached out and maybe we can get a complete replacement eliminating or incorporating the door.
Cool. I also had no idea. That’ll teach me to make assumptions! Thanks.

Seriously... Start with the dimensions of THAT space and build a better mouse trap. (or in this case, cupholder assembly)

+1. Given how easy it is to remove that entire piece, it'd be much more beneficial to have a deeper unit that replaces the entire OEM piece. Might allow for having water bottles in place and not have them interfere with the sliding arm rests.

After the last few posts, I removed my cup holder assembly and sent it to @bhicks to save time if shipping prototypes back and forth. After 7-8 more prototypes, he is returning my insert with his final product. I don’t know his time frame for production but thought you’d like to see the photos he sent me of the second to last piece. He had a few minor tweaks after this one and is finished. It’ll be nice of have cup holders again, and now ones that will actually hold cups!

This is great news!

@bhicks I'm gonna be that guy and ask a question. Clearly I do this with zero knowledge of how these things are constructed.

Can you "cut out" some material that butts the 2 sides together? AKA can the dead space between the 2 sides be a vertical phone holder?

Most popular phones uncased are about 2.65" to 2.9" wide.

Either way, I plan to buy, just curious.

This is going to be good. Love the idea of ditching the full rectangle and getting some real holders in there

Awesome, lets get them into production!

Doesn't look like anyone has suggested these. I have one in my LX. The large cutout allows it to sit in a cup holder that is up against a door/lid. The base comes in 2 or 3 different sizes, plus includes are boor coozy so that if fits snug in your small cup holder. I have them in my LX and my Odyssey.

So here is the final product. I need an opinion from you guys. The cup holder below has been hand sanded, polished, and painted with a flat black paint that is for plastic. It's somewhat durable paint BUT NOT dishwasher safe. When this version gets dirty you have to hand clean it. My raw plastic cup holders that actually look 3D printed are very dishwasher safe. Most of the inserts I sell I leave in the raw plastic due to their durability and ease of cleaning and the ability to keep the price down. You guys are a VERY different buyer then my usual clients who only care about function. I fully understand this is going into a much more high end rig and want to know if the finished look is more important than the ease of cleaning. The raw plastic inserts that look 3D printed will be around $30 for the pair. That would include the cost of shipping anywhere in the US. The hand sanded, polished, and painted inserts would be around $50 for the pair due to the extra labor in finishing. If your opinions are split 50/50 then I may offer both and see which one is the big seller then discontinue to other later. Righ now I have already gone into production on these. I will look into the cell phone slot idea but I'm pretty sure there isn't enough room. I need a 4" slot for a phone and I don't think I have that much space. I will look into it and report back. Here's what the painted version looks like.

I vote for painted for myself. And I will pay you right now for one of the ones you’re producing.
Thanks for your opinion. I will be releasing these on my website tomorrow evening.. I just want to make sure I have a large enough batch to absorb the original wave of orders.

I vote for washable raw unpainted. Thanks!

I've never washed one in the dishwasher, so hand painted would be ideal for me.

That’s was my thought as well. I’ve never put a cup holder in the dishwasher. I’ve never even taken one out of the car. Just wipe up messes as they happen.
I have 4 kids and they find ways to spill all types of sticky crap in the cup holders. I often toss my black inserts from my 80 series cup holders in the dishwasher. Probably not needed if it was just my wife and I but with kids; it's a must.
