Jack

That did actually cross my mind during this process!

How's the steering clearance when one side is hanging down like it would be under flex? I think you may still have trouble. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news if so...even after the rain comment.

Here's a pic of my steering clearance as it sits. This is with ridiculous caster; like 10 degrees. Check out the finish on those leaf springs. :)

BTW, I got my weld in thread inserts, so Ill be getting some tubing this week to get a better idea without the slop of the PVC.
Got em from front range off road for FJ80 tie rod ends.
So, when I get that in place, Ill see better how the clearance is. A little bit of rub isnt gonna kill me, but if its BINDING...that will be a different story.

Also...
Got some work done on the tilt column.
Got the firewall plate cut out and a plate made for the new column to go through....
However, the steering column is LOCKED, so I gotta get it to a lock smith (?) to get a key made? Never done that before......

My tie rod has always rubbed against the springs under articulation, the springs bend around it, no worries, it'll be fine. The part that bugs me is frame clearance and trying to make for more up travel.

I believe I have a lock puller.

Thanks for measuring that for me that will give me an idea. Sucks the proffits shackle did'nt workout but now you can atleast move on. I can't wait till I am where you are at just got my gears and lockers so atleast i can finish my axles so they can sit in the corner with all the other stuff. Looks great

Like a slide-hammer thing? I'd bring the whole column to a smithy and get a shiny key.

I got a tire sponsorship today! Details pending. I'm pretty-well committed to making it down to S&T though.

I'm staring to work on drive shafts...

Thanks for posting up on this topic busta!
That is kind of what I was thinking too. However, Ill know more when I get the REAL tie rod in and droop it and see just how bad it is.
Again...worst case, Ill get the 4x4 labs steer arms. More than I wanna spend, but...what do you do.

No it screws in behind the steering wheel, down the center of the column, I think it presses the locking plate in so the whole tumbler assembly slides out. I've never used it, it came with the tool set.

Got your message Rusty.

:) I sent him some links, some stats and asked. I'm keeping it under wraps until I can post some pictures. Not a freebie, but a nice pro deal. He's sending a banner and some swag. We'll be right down in front showing off his, now my tires. I'm guessing you'll see a lot of them within a year. 315-75/16s on flat black soft 8s.

NICE!
Ill have to stagger over and check em out!
Congrats on that!

Got my tie rod tubing today, and the weld in FJ80 thread inserts. There was a bit of a snafu with those though...Lowrange off road got the WRONG BATCH of L hand thread inserts and will be sending me new ones as soon as they get in. SOOOOO, I was only able to get one side "fixed" for a more accurate check on the tie rod clearance.
The side that was set up with the ends in CLEARS at FULL DROOP clock to clock. The side without BARELY rubs at full droop. When I sinch everything down, I may get just a "C" hair of rub at MAX stuff either side, but Im okay with that. Its running that way.

Got the perches set in their positions, mocked it up for one final check. The shackle hangers are at the same dimension, BUT....One side is OFF 2 deg. I think its the offset of the motor to the PS. Dawned on me today. Not going to make a fuss about it though.
Will get the housing and hangers welded in this weekend and maybe painted and partly re assembled.
Still have some grinding to do inside the ball ends to fit the longs.
Getting there!:bounce::bounce2:

K

Are you sure you are gonna have to grind? I guess that means 77 was the first year of no grinding to fit the longs??

Likely, it's 79 when the birfield changed.

I know I had to grind my 76 and not my 84, but the grinding was trivial-a few moments per side with the 4 inch angle grinder.

He is using a 60 series front axle, so I am surprised that he is having to grind also...

Jack

no grinding should be necessary.

not sure if my old roomate had to grind any when he did his in his 77, and thats is why I guessed that but on bobby's website it says 76+ so.... I have 2 60's and my 42 was an 82 never would have been an issue for me either way. :meh:
