80's tend to last longer...
It's all about use... If you play hard with it, you're likely to break it.
Maybe this will get me to slow down about and not treat the 80 as my trophy truck.

I also have Slee plates for 4” lift. My front lift is more like 4.5” and my castor is less than 1*.
I was wondering more about your pinion angle. With what you have, you should be set well for the DC shaft which requires zero angle between the pinion shaft and driveline.
My DC front shaft has run smoothly with J springs, Slee 4”, OME 5” comps and now with the 4.5” set up. If we go to Slee arms in order to dial in more castor angle, pinion angle would then become an issue. My rig is part time now but a smooth operating shaft for deep snow and mud performance is still desired.
My caster is in the same range, between 0-1°, and I agree you can't fix one issue without messing with the other. The big reason I haven't messed with it from where it's at. Currently I'm running without my front drive shaft and only installing for trail use. A part time kit has been on my mind heavily lately as I've been working through this. I just know that it isn't truly aren't part time, just selectable front hubs and the front drivetrain is still turning.

All you should need is a DC shaft right now. Castor is a different issue.
Yes, simply installing hubs is not part time. You gotta go with the whole shebang to stop the driveline from turning. Come on money bags, pony up!

Yep, it's just cash. But if I open the transfer case for a part time kit I already know what will happen.
:worms:

As for the DC drive shaft, I'll call around and get some quotes to have the one I currently got professionally rebuilt. Given the SoCal premium prices this time of year (desert season), it might be cheaper to just pick up a new one.

Crazy talk time!!!

Regarding your plans for a part time x-case:
Has anyone ever looked into the FJC transfer case swap into our 80's?

The front output is on the left hand side of the transfer case on the FJC/T4R/Tacoma/GX

Low range gear and part time spool-DONE. Georg at Valley Hybrids told me that rarely do they need to replace bearings in the hf2a. I had them replace my input and output bearings and seals anyway. I much prefer the driving characteristics of the part time 80 plus Aisin hubs are downright sexxxxxy.

You have made it clear that you don’t like the 80 series. Why do you own one?

That makes sense

Following up as I said I would.

Installed the factory front driveshaft again. The front 3rd member is silent; no noise, clicking, growling, or otherwise. The driveshaft does have a slight vibe to it as I knew it would due to the angle. But it is a huge improvement over the DC driveshaft I removed. It is disheartening that the CV u-joints only made it 20k and less than one year, but then again I have put the truck through it's paces during that time.

What type of front Double Cardan joint were you running?

Tatton’s with 1310 spicer.
I had my DC shafts built by a driveline shop in West Sacramento with Spicer Life series 1310 joints and have had no problems.

I did convert to part time before the shaft had 20k on it but it probably had between 10k-15k mikes and plenty of rock crawling.

I also run a rear 1310 DC with the Life Series joints and it also has less than 20k with plenty of abuse. Your story has me interested to see if I too will have an early DC problem with the rear shaft. I also carry a second , spare DC rear shaft. It’s expensive insurance but, I think, worth it.

On the positive side; Spicer joints are easy to get your hands on and reasonably priced.

Been a while since I updated my thread.

Replaced my rear control arm bushings a few weeks ago. The old ones were pretty beat up. They came out and pressed back in with no issues. Used old bearing pieces to press against to not deform the new bushings.

I also wired in a 7-way trailer kit I picked up from Amazon. I mounted it to a stainless steel hinge of the back edge of my rear bumper. This way I can fold it up out of harms way when not towing.

I also wired up my rear aux bumper lights to come on with the backup lights. I spliced into the harness at the driver foot panel and ran a wire to the switch side of my aux light switch. I made sure to install a diode on both the switch and spiced wire so that I can manually use my dash rocker switch without any issues. I’ll finally be able to see what’s behind my in the dark again .

And the reason my truck hasn’t been getting that much love recently is because I acquired a pop up camp trailer that quickly became a full restomod project.

Finally got around to fixing my transfer case leak. The o-ring in the speedo gear thing had gone bad. Changed the TC fluid while I was there.

Also installed a new front driveshaft from @NLXTACY, thanks again Joey!

And got my new skid plates installed that we had Bent Motorsports in San Marcos build. Great work guys! Can’t wait to try them out!
