Hi All-

New (to the 60 side) here; I had a FJ40 for a number of years but it didn't fit the needs of the family (little kids) so I've moved into a 60.

My 60 has the original tan/brown interior and I am looking to upgrade the center console to a Tuffy (or similar), but with the OEM brown center console, I think the black Tuffy will stick out like a sore thumb and not fit the OEM+ look I'm going for. I've done some looking but haven't been able to find a nice looking brown Tuffy (or similar), so, my question is - what are folks doin that have the tan/brown interior doing for a larger, upgraded and locking center console?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

I got the Smittybuilt console in “Spice” for my tan/brown interior and it looks fine. The armrest is brown and the console itself is sort of gray. I did ditch the cheap plastic cup holders and added some Tuffy cup holders (which you can buy separately.)

I’ll get some pics up shortly.

Awesome, thanks DFXR...looking forward to photos.

Thanks for sharing @roadstr6 - that's a pretty solid match.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like Tuffy sells the "tan" version anymore, so guessing I would have to get a black one and then have the armrest recovered as well. 💸💸

If someone knows where/if brown ones are still available, would appreciate some info.

As another option, I purchased my center console from @orikawa who is a vendor here

Great product and happy customer.
Thanks....I had seen these and unfortunately just don't love the look as much as the Tuffy.

You can easily recover the armrest with brown or tan vinyl from pretty much any fabric store. I got black vinyl for the armrest in my pig from Walmart for less than $10. Used less than half of it and rolled up the rest for future projects. Only other tools you need are a screwdriver (to remove the armrest) and a staple gun.

Thanks for the help, all. After a little sleuthing I was able to find the black base with the Spice armrest

Here and also here - these will probably be the easiest to paint the base and have the Spice armrest

Here's the Smittybilt, with Tuffy cupholders. Brown interior but the seats are obv not stock.

It's been good. The lock is mickey mouse but that's what I expected.

If you can get the Tuffy, in any color, that's what I'd do. Then make it work with fabric or paint. The Tuffys were 6-8 months out when I was shopping for a console 3 or 4 years ago. It's not that much more $ than the Smittybilt but the quality is much higher.

In your '84 60, where did you find the rear seat back with headrests? Out of a 62?

@DFXR - thanks for the photos and advice; am leaning towards a Tuffy.

In regards to the rear seat, yes, it's out of a 62. Nice to have the headrest for the kids (and anyone else who is riding back there).

With a little work they can be made to match pretty well. For my 80, I painted the console with high quality wrinkle paint then covered that with a matching Rustoleum paint. Remade the cushion to my liking with factory material. It’s held up for 10 years and honestly the texture looks better in person. It’s not showing well in pics.

@roadstr6 what did you do/use to give a "quick scuff" to your console prior to painting?

That was years ago, but I know I used sandpaper. 400 grit would work nicely. You just need to scuff it enough for the new paint to have some "tooth" to grab onto. It has held up fine since that time. Still looks great.
