A good friend gifted me a new set of calipers that you see in the pictures, way nicer than the plastic ones that I was using!!

Glad RCV took care of you.
Did they ask you to ship back the faulty shaft? If not, I wonder if it is possible to have a machine shop mill the surface down to the proper diameter. You'd have a high-end spare! Not sure if that would mess with any heat treatment though.

They wanted me to send it back, they also said that they would send a return shipping label, but I did not receive it. 🤷‍♂️
I will call them in the morning.
 
So I worked on it today, I needed to get the inner shaft off the birfild. I have been able to do this before with a short lenght of PVC tubing and piece Plywood on the floor.
Repeated slams Tue. evening netted zero results.
Came back this morning same thing nothing. So I called my friend Randy @raisinhell2 and asked him how he does it, he said the same way except he uses a steel pipe and slams it onto a piece of steel plate.
I was reluctant ( afraid of damaging things ) he assured me not to worry, so I grabbed some 13/4" steel tubing and some 1/2" plate steel and went at it, I kept raising it higher and slamming harder tell on the forth try it popped lose. Zero damage 😍 including the inner snap ring which I had to reuse because they did not sent one with the birfild.
When I spoke to RCV yesterday they confirmed that they wanted the defective birfild back and that I should have received shipping label and snap ring. when I asked if I could purchase a spare snap ring they offered to send out 4 of them at no charge with the shipping label.
They won't arrive tell next week so, I was happy the one inside of the birfild did not get damaged.

When I broke the axles on the trail I removed the front drive shaft and both drive flanges to keep the axles form moving and creating more damage. I taped small baggies to the ends of the axles to try to keep dirt and water out grease and oil in.

As you can see it may of helped but really did not work, there was several deep water crossing and water definitely got in. probably would not have been a issue if I had tore it down right away, but as it was when I got to it there was some extra surface rust on some of the inner parts.


If I had these caps made by Lee @Outsane (solvefunction.com) I could have sealed it up easily and avoided the mess / issue.
I ended up putting the drive flange and cap back on to keep it from puking gear oil on my trailer and the road on the drive home.

These caps will now be part of my bag of tricks that I carry on the rig. They will fit 40s, 60s, 80s, mini trucks and 4runners. So you can help others on the trail if need be !
They allow the wheel to spin without turning the axle.
Simple and effective product !!

Although the ones for the front would work on the back, he also makes these for the back ( full float axles only )

I’ve had serious QC problems with one front and one rear RCV. Makes me wonder where their shafts are actually being made.
 
Just like laboratory work there….. nice and orderly looking. My work area looks like a bomb went off; stuff everywhere. You got those caps from Lee?

A question Lee, just to clarify, is the "1 quantity" on your website for these caps mean 1 set (2 caps) or is it $40 per cap? And if it is a set and you order the optional gasket, it includes a set of gaskets (2)?

Order includes 1 cap and 1 seal, I think it's pretty rare to pull off a "Broski" and break both axles. You can always order two if you think you might. It's a long print.

Thanks for the clarification! I'm thinking I'd want 2 caps, JIK I had 3rd member problems, besides a broke axle(s). I could isolate the 3rd by pulling the DS and both flanges. Install caps, lock the CDL and motor home. This would work on either front or back. Perfect to carry for a trail fix!

I have always used a steel pipe as well to separate the shaft from the brif. I think if I remember correctly we kept spare clips I believe from u joints to use as the clips for birfs to shaft?

Oooh! Those caps are a really good idea! Not always easy to flush all of the garbage out of the wheel bearings when you get back to camp after a failure and it's nice to keep the axle goup where the axle goup belongs. Assuming I don't shear all of my studs off, those look great.

I'll probably need 3 - one for each side and the one I lose in to the mud/ snow/ over a cliff or is stolen by my trail buddy that also broke a shaft. :rolleyes:

Interesting not sure if they’re interchangeable.
At this point I’m trying to figure out if the RCV 300m axles snap rings are the same as the OEM rings
The 300M axles are 2MM bigger on the Birfild side.
The 4 snap rings from RCV just came in when I get the OEM version from Cruiser Outfitters I will report back if there the same or not.

I've interchanged them, though that doesn't mean I'm right.
