This is what a stock concept Pig suspension would look like.

Something like that would be amazing, but is far out of my expertise to build, and likely out of my budget to have built (the OME suspension was ~$2200).

I wish you were down here near San Diego, I'd see if you'd help plan and build with me.

Also, you raced the Baja?!?!? With a vintage rig? I'm super curious what you raced, how it went, and anything else you learned that you think would be helpful.

"...redesigned stock concept long travel suspension, bypass shocks, air bumps and run the maximum tire size the class rules allow of 35” on beadlocks as a starting point.

J Mack, would you be interested in helping me create a specific build plan for the above?

I already have the OME suspension on a pallet here ready to install, but I'm not married to it. I could see if Kurt at Cruiser Outfitters would work with me on returning it or sending to another buyer.

I wish you were down here near San Diego,

You have lots of fantastic resources down there around you that would be far better at helping you come up with a realistic plan than I.

I posted a link to Giant Motorsports down there in Garden Grove and they offer several “bolt-on” kits for full size rigs like the Bronco and Ranger and one of those might be easily adapted to the pig.

It wouldn’t surprise me to hear a middle of the pack setup would have 25K under the frame rails in housings, shocks, springs and fab work and if you don’t have what it takes to do the work yourself I would be prepared to hear a number similar to that.

The rules say you can run a pre-83 engine from same make, you would be wise to look into some of your Toyota pre-83 fuel injected options if you decide to pull the trigger on running gear that has a chance to finish the race.

IMHO the Pig is not your best option for a starting platform unless you have a burning desire to just be different and an unlimited budget to accomplish your goal. For example, the sister car to mine (The Angry Pig) finished the 100th running of the 1000 I believe third in class, they all had a great time and lived to tell the story. I’d sell you that car for 60k with all the spare parts and you’d need to spend a weekend on race-prep and head down run your own race and have fun without destroying your back.

If I were to build a pig that I thought had a good chance of finishing the race I would expect to be over 100k and know for a fact it would take my back months to recover, I believe this is why you don’t see a bunch of guys building rigs specifically for that vintage class, way better bang for the buck in other classes.

You might find something interesting in here.

Good luck and please keep us posted with your progress.

I wonder if you ran ORI struts with minimal leafs and a panhard bar for stability. ORI look like regular shocks, kinda.

J Mack, I read your thread on the Angry Pig. Very cool!

"...doesn’t make it bad just not something I would consider if I was building a vehicle to drive fast off road"

I'm actually not trying to build a racer. The vision and principles I opened the build thread with are still where my head is at long term, and will guide the build long after the Baja.

I want to take THAT rig--not really a racer, but a relatively capable trail rig--and give the Baja a go, with the primary purpose to have some fun and to raise money for an important charity down there (y'all should consider giving $20 😘 - unfamedadventure.com/race)

With a few exceptions, like maybe the dry lakebed near San Felipe, we won't be very fast. More tortoise than hare.

We've done a bunch of the trails in Baja that usually end up on the route and think the 55 will be able to handle them slow and steady.

Think of what I want to do more in the spirit of the Class 11 VW bugs than of the Angry Pig's Trent Fab top shelf sister car that finished 40th overall.

In other news, the Corbeau Baja Ultra seats came in yesterday. Well one of them did... sounds like the other may have been damaged in transport.

Remember that part of the vision around "creature comforts?"

It's a suspension seat that should help save our backs a bit on the trails. I also added the inflatable lumbar support.

The driver seat is heated.

I'll be running a 5-point camlock harness belt with this.

Pics coming soon, once I open the box!

Megadoomer, I'm intrigued. Maybe we can talk through that idea more Monday night in person?

I plan on being there.

I think the deal breaker for that race is needing a fuel cell. Unless you can put a temporary one in the cargo area. Or maybe I think it is more complicated than it is.

Just opened it up. Looks like the damaged package had brackets, harnesses, and mounts.

So comfortable! I'm a big guy (6'3", 220), which is part of why I chose this seat. Feels good. Tried pumping up the lumbar support while sitting in it and this seat basically hugs/supports every inch, including up on the sides a quite a bit.

Covering them back up for now, don't want to mount them until the roll cage is in.
