Blue fan clutch mod...Thread has gone to hell, read at your own risk (3 Viewers)

Well, I followed this thread and did the mod with a blue fan clutch. Drained out and baked it to clean it out more then carb cleaner to completely clean it with 30 more minutes in the oven. 45 ml of 20k and put it all back together. Turned on the AC and tried a big hill again. Temp climbed with outside temp of 100. When the truck got to 221 on my Ultra gauge, I turned off the AC and it climbed to 224 by the time I was at the top. Why too hot!! When I turned around and went back down it was 199 by the bottom. I have a 3 row ultra cooling aftermarket radiator that is brass. Going back to the 2 row stock and see if it cools better.

If you are at 186° in this weather you are good with roar/noise or no roar;)

Tha fan clutch is not like a light and either on or off. And it's job isn't only to maintain engine temps, there is cooling the AC condensor and transmission.

So there isn't a simple logarithm as to weather or not fan roar at idle indicates an issue or not.
 
well it was 90 degrees today. Ran some errands around town and the numbers are pretty amazing. Blasting the A/C i was running 186 and maxed out at 190 when I let the car idle with the A/C on for about 15 mins.

However, it sounds like I'm driving a semi truck. The fan is really loud and I can feel it robbing a ton of the low end power.

Do I just have to get used to this running 15k fluid? Or is there a chance I adjusted the screws wrong? When finished mine were about in the same spot as the original post.

Anything is possible. Did you adjust the screws using some method to monitor the temperature?

Also, 'over-filling' the clutch with Silicone Fluid 'can' result in the fan clutch running all the time.

IF everything was done correctly....then you are just hearing the fan move copious amounts of air. ;)

You can always drop down to 10K CST or even 'blend' Fluids to achieve a mixture of your liking.

I'd drive it for awhile and see what you think.

Ok will do. It doesn't seem to be running all the time, but when it's hot out the fan is really roaring and i feel like i'm pulling a heavy trailer.

I did adjust the screws using a pan of water and a medical thermometer to get to 95 degrees. I'm wondering if maybe I should recheck that. Or maybe I should raise the engagement temp a bit?
 
Just drive it. If your mileage absolutely tanks.. then maybe consider adjusting things. But in this weather IMO keeping the engine healthy is paramount.

Btw.. it takes quite a while for the fan clutch to adjust to differences in temperature.. which is what happens when you are sitting at idle and it has to lock up quite a bit to pull adequate air through the radiator for cooling. Then, you pull away from a stop light and the clutch is still largely engaged. Cooler air starts flowing (same radiator temp but much more air volume as RPMs rise, so that air will measure less warm), cools the fan clutch, and it has to pump that really thick fluid from the surface plates into the reservoir to reduce the engagement. This doesn't happen instantly. You'll probably find that as you keep driving away from that light with higher RPMs the fan will quiet down considerably.

Then sit at another light.. cycle repeats.

Again, I'd just drive it, knowing you have good AC and no concerns about water temp.
 
@NLXTACY I ordered, received and installed. I see 4 degree across the board difference. Awesome!!!

Just curious why 13mm nuts instead of OEM 12mm? I threw away all my 13mm because there aren't any other 13mm on a cruiser.

Dammit! When I first ordered those JIS "small bolt" nuts I got two boxes. One box was correct and one wasn't. Unfortunately I didn't catch it. Tossed out all the 13s and reordered. Order was fine. Since then I've reorder a few times. I suppose it's time to see how many I need to throw away again :bang:

Migrating to SAE + using 13mm nuts = mechanical delights

I was working on the install and just in my position over the ARB I kept asking my son to get a 12 mm. I kept getting pissed and saying dammit, I need a 12 mm. Whatever you gave me isn't working. On the third time I finally looked at the wrenches he was giving me and they were all 12 mm. I was like WTF? Are you serious? 13 mm?

Yea, throw them far away. :-)

13mm, I literally have no 13mm wrenches, I buy sets of snap on wrenches and give all the unwanted ones to my nephew to wrench on his truck. No SAE either!!!
