on the seat mounts, look at some of the custom roll bars with frame ties, you could very easily build seat mounts off the roll cage,

Thanks for that Ray. I'll remember that for next time. Unfortunately, I am old and I am grey and it may take more time than I have to find another BJ.
 
Well, the journey so far has taken just over a year. I have fitted most of the wiring and all the dashboard bits and I am fiddling around trying to delay the inevitable. Switching on ! Oh, I forgot. She has been painted. I agonised for weeks to get my perfect colour. Having chosen, my son said he could spare a week to do the job starting tomorrow. Dashing off to the suppliers we discovered that Rhone green was a metallic. My son doesn't do metallic. Oh, b......s. Decision made in 5 mins. Rustic green. It's O.K. but a bit drab. Too much like a Land Rover. Heaven help me! My next blog may be a little late as I am trying to fathom out how to draw out fuel from the tank and expel all the air. I suppose bio diesel tastes a bit nicer than petrol but I still don't fancy it. ( I think I am just prevaricating over that switch on.)

Why not pressurize the tank to about 2-3 PSI (sorry, I don't do bar well) and bleed the air at the engine?

If you can get a spare fuel tank cap, you can drill a hole and put a schrader valve in it and add pressure as needed.
Good idea. But wouldn't air leak out through that contraption behind the filler cap? What is that anyway? Mine has 3 tubes in from the tank and one tube in or out through a filter . A metal tube attached to the filter had rusted away so goes nowhere. Any clues?

That's your fuel / water separator thingymugig
 
Problem solved re. bleeding fuel line (whoops). I coupled a rubber pipe to the filter on that thingermejig behind the fuel filter then plugged my air compressor onto the pipe. I only gave it a short burst of air then hotfooted it round to the other side to where I had disconnected the final fuel pipe. Good job I am still pretty nifty. Fuel was pouring from the tube and had half filled a small bucket I had strategically placed . With fuel still pouring out I jammed it onto the final tube. Finally, what little air was left was bled from the fuel filter using the hand pump. I had no more excuses. I had to fire her up . Unbelievably, once again she started immediately and ran sweetly.Now comes the problems. The relay on the side of the radiator ( glow plugs ? ) was buzzing like a hornets nest. (Disconnect) Glow plug light stays on. ( ignore)Smoke issuing from cigarette lighter. ( remove ). Left hand rear reversing light on ( ignore ). Right hand turn signal light on ( ignore ). Black smoke pouring from exhaust ( cry ).
 
Black smoke is over fueling typically. I'm not familiar with a 3B fuel pump, but my guess is your problem lies there. The other problems sound like ground issues due to the fiberglass tub. Great job so far!

Not much progress as garage around zero degrees and no heating. U.K. Under snow. Unsuccessfully persuing chattering glow plug relay no.1. Starts about 5 secs. after switching ignition key to glow and stays chattering with engine running. Glow plug lamp flickering with engine running. Can someone tell me if the glow plugs remain energised with the engine up and running. I have always been under the impression that diesels keep running without glow plugs glowing due to a much higher compression ratio than petrol engines or has my knowledge of diesels been rubbish for over 80 years.

I can't speak to the functionality of the factory glow system, but no the plugs do not need to be energized with the engine running. Like Jim mentions, you can set up a switch to operate them on demand to help smooth out a rough start/idle. I wired mine so as long as the ignition is in the ON position I can use a switch to power the glow plugs.

Put a volt meter on your glow plugs with the engine running - it's unlikely, but possible for a relay to fail closed. I'd also check the wiring of the ignition switch. You can wire in a generic relay to use your "GLOW" ignition switch position, or use a momentary switch for the 'afterglow' functionality, or both.

Thanks guys, I would prefer to keep the factory system but if I have no luck then your option sounds good. I have a relay 1 and relay 2 set up which as I understand it monitors the current( relay 1) and voltage (relay 2 ) fed to the heater control unit. Would I need to break both relay supplies? What is a Wilson switch? It isn't in my vocabulary.

Correction. Not the heater control unit, the glow plug timer. Idiot!
